Kidney infection: Your passed kidney stone may have left a buddy behind that's causing obstruction or blockage of ureter or even kidney infection. Once stone passes, there should be complete relief. Possible infection: I am not sure what type of stone you have, but a staghorn stone in the kidney area (composed of several minerals/struvites) which can get infected. Only if the stone leaves the kidney and either travels down to the bladder or worse, if it gets stuck in front of the kidney and obstructs the kidney, would a stone be a cause of pain.
