Is it safe to take Imitrex (sumatriptan) several days in a row?

Is it safe to take Imitrex (sumatriptan) several days in a row?

Recommended dosage: The "triptans" such as Imitrex (sumatriptan) can be used no more than 2 tabs in a given 24 hours...Some people have prolonged attacks of migraines needing to use it for couple of days in a row...So, if you are young and healthy otherwise, a couple of days of use should be ok. However, the need to use for few days suggests u should consult doc for a better regimen. Preventive care rx...Good luck.

I am a daily user of imitrex (sumatriptan). I have chronic daily severe migraines. What is recommended?

I am a daily user of imitrex (sumatriptan). I have chronic daily severe migraines. What is recommended?

Medication over use: You may have a condition known as medication overuse headache. This used to be called rebound headache. This can occur from frequent use of medications designed to abort headaches. Usually one will need to detox from the medications and start on a preventative type medication to control the headache. You should consult with a headache specialist. Http://www. Americanheadachesociety. Org/.

Are there risks associated with taking Imitrex (sumatriptan) for migraines on a long term basis, for 1-2 migraines per month?

Are there risks associated with taking Imitrex (sumatriptan) for migraines on a long term basis, for 1-2 migraines per month?

None that we know of: So long as the long term usage remains at 1-2x/month. If at some point the patient or doctor recognizes that things are escalating to 2-3/month or 3-4/month...even though these are still below what would be considered CHRONIC patterns of dependency it should be clear that something is changing that needs to be dealt with...otherwise, long term use @ 1-2x/month is fine. BTW, you should start DIARY

Can a person who takes Imitrex (sumatriptan) for migraines build a tolerance to the drug?  having to eventually increase dose or change medications?

Is it the right med?: I have seen many, many people who do not respond to typical migraine medications (imitrex, relpax, (eletriptan) maxalt, etc) because they don't have true migraines. Often time any bad headache is diagnosed as a migraine. There are many other types of headaches that can be just as bad (tension, cluster, rebound, etc) that do not respond to those treatments. Confirm that your diagnosis is correct first!

How long does Imitrex (sumatriptan) last?

How long does Imitrex (sumatriptan) last?

Long enough: The effect of immitrex should be several houirs, long enough to resolve a headache. It can be given as a second dose in 2-4 hours. It should be given with a non steroidal antiinflammmatory such as Ibuprofen or naprosyn, (naproxen) to supplement its effect and speed relief.

Can one build a tolerance to imitrex (sumatriptan)?

In a way: There does seem to be a waxing and waning effect of many headache medications, and a drug that works well for years can become less effective with time. In addition, using Imitrex (sumatriptan) more than 2-3 times per week can lead to the development of a medication overuse headache, which is very difficult to effectively treat. You may wish to consider adding a prophylactic medication.

Can I use Imitrex (sumatriptan) and maxalt in the same day?

Can I use Imitrex (sumatriptan) and maxalt in the same day?

Yes, but: More than 2 doses of each on the same day has not been well studied. Funny thing about this is there is an upper limit on daily dose of each drug per fda, but no upper limit on combination. We really don't know effect of 4 doses. They do work on the same body system and should have additive effect if dosed together. Keep that in mind when you make decision about how much to take in the same day.
