Other conditions: There is no test for the diagnosis of IBS. It is important to exclude other conditions like Celiac Disease, intolerance to lactose/sucrose /fructose or inflammatory bowel disease which can present with the same symptoms. IBS responds well to diet, antispasmodics, probiotics and perhaps anti anxiety medications. Advice to see a gastroenterologist for further testing. ...Read more

Tried probiotics for the first time 3 pills over 3 days for my IBS, stopped after getting stomach ache and nausea, been 3 days and I'm still the same

Off & on I'll get stomach ache. Bit side discomfort. Nausea. Doc said ibs. Stool is always soft mushy. Green-brown. Slimy & green mucus. This ibs?

Wellll....: The presence of mucus concerns me — could be a sign of inflammatory bowel disease. Ibs is more of a description than a disease — there's no diagnostic test or treatment, and is usually tagged to people who have any number of vague GI symptoms but no definitive diagnosis. I suggest good hydration, a balanced diet, and some yogurt. Consider a GI consult for the stool mucus. Good luck. ...Read more

Could be IBS: Ibs does not usually go away. It requires being careful with your diet, usually for life. Abdominal pain after eating could also be a sign of ulcer disease or other stomach problems. If this is a new symptom, it should be evaluated by your doctor. And you may want to keep a food diary to see if you can figure out what is causing your symptoms. ...Read more

I have fibromyalgia and IBS and have been taking l-glutamine powder for 5 days. I've gained 1,5kgs and my stomach hurts, should I stop? I'm 22, female

Glutamine powder: Is supposed to help improve your immune system health but there is no scientific studies proving that it works and at what dosage. So people tend to think if 1 gram helps, 1 kg of it must help 1000 times. Of course, it doesn't work like that, but there is no actual guide in how much is enough. So people get fooled into buying large amounts of this supplement without having a clue how to take it. ...Read more

Can IBS pain settle in one area of the abdomen? Can it hurt to the touch on and off?

Can IBS pain settle in one area of the abdomen? Can it hurt to the touch on and off?

Not usually: IBS usually does not localize to one spot of the abdomen, although it certainly could. If I had pain which localized to one particular spot and was tender to the touch, I would worry more about some sort of inflammatory process, perhaps appendicitis, diverticulitis, or other problems. If this persists, you should get it checked out. Good luck. ...Read more

I'm really suffering with migraines & OTC meds aren't helping at all, plus they hurt my stomach (I've had p. Ulcers before & have ibs). Advice?

See a neurologist: Migraines can be pretty miserable. I had them for years before I learned there were medicines specifically for migraine and even medicines to cut down the frequency of headaches. The over the counter meds can be irritating to the stomach and are not very effective. They are often a cause of a certain type of headache. Talk to a doctor who can help you manage your headaches. ...Read more

Why do I get cramps when I eat? And when I do my boobs hurt? I have IBS with excessive stomach acid, Abdominal tenderness, epigastric and gut issues

Bowel stimulation: When you eat, the food in your stomach triggers a set of digestive enzymes and bile to be release that stimulates bowel function, which can cause cramping, especially if you have irritable bowel syndrome. If you are having steady or aching pain each time you eat, talk with your doctor — sometimes this can be caused by a narrowing of your mesenteric artery. (Intestinal angina). ...Read more

Is abdominal pain all over part of IBS? Hasn't been this way before, that I recall.

R U sure U have IBS?: The GI tract has a very limited # of symptoms to signal its distress--nausea/vomiting, diarrhea/constipation, bloating, pain, fullness, bleeding, etc. As you know, many of these characterize ibs, but are also seen with inflammatory, infectious, ischemic, malabsorptive, and functional disorders. Directed lab work, imaging, biopsies, stool studies are appropriate in excluding non-ibs pathology. ...Read more
