Is it dangerous to stand in front of a microwave in use while pregnant? My microwave is new it's less than a year old and it was only for 10-20 sec

There is no risk: To a pregnant woman from microwaves, in that they have no ability to penetrate to the fetus, or the mommy. This is toward the "infra-red" range of the electromagnetic spectrum not the other direction, where x-rays are sufficiently energetic to penetrate. Is it safe to defrost blueberries in the microwave? I heard some zapping and it made me nervous. Did this for over a year including when pregnant.

Is it safe to defrost blueberries in the microwave? I heard some zapping and it made me nervous. Did this for over a year including when pregnant.

Microwave ovens: Simply heat an item by agitating its molecules. The "radiation" is non-ionizing, meaning it does not alter the dna or molecular structure of the food the way x-rays and gamma rays can. So the only damage to blueberries (or any other food) would be from over heating. "zapping" can occur from sparks when a metalic container is used or from steam "exploding." defrosting blueberries is safe. ...Read more

37 weeks pregnant and burnt a plastic cup in microwave. When I opened microwave, fumes poured out. I inhaled much of the fumes. Any risk to my baby?

No significant risk: Plastic fumes are not good for anyone but by 37 weeks your baby is almost fully developed and this should not have a significant effect. This would have been more worrisome in the first trimester (but even then would probably be OK unless you really inhaled a large amount). Don't worry. Hope your delivery goes smoothly! ...Read more

19 weeks pregnant and been eating microwave popcorn a few times a week. Someone said the lining in the bag could cause miscarriage or damage to baby. Is this true? I never heard this before.

Not likely: The main risk is from inhaling diacetyl fumes and most who got sick did so through occupational exposure. Many manufacturers have since removed diacetyl from their microwave popcorn. You can make your own microwave popcorn by putting plain kernels in a clean brown paper lunch bag, fold the top over a few times, and heat on the popcorn setting of your microwave. Add melted butter if you like. ...Read more
