It does in some: Women but I would not count on that. It is used to treat infections especially vaginal infections so I am not sure what it will do to your periods. It does have a nasty side effect if you drink any type of alcohol with it on board. Beware :) Thanks for trusting in HealthTap. ...Read more

Can taking Flagyl or metronidazole cause delays in my period?

Can taking Flagyl or metronidazole cause delays in my period?

Possibly: If you are using Flagyl at the same time with the oral contraceptive pill, you could be pregnant due to preferential aborption of the Flagyl over the contraceptive leaving you "unprotected" for pregnancy. Obtain a pregnancy test or see a md if no period within 3 additional days. ...Read more

Took one flagyl oral pill and taking metronidazole currently. Can this delay my period?

Took one flagyl oral pill and taking metronidazole currently. Can this delay my period?

Are you a guy?: Flagyl is a brand name for metronidazole, so you are (or she is) taking a single antibiotic. Theoretically, metronidazole & other antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptive, altho the chance from this specific antibiotic is very small. If your (or her) period is late, I recommend a pregnancy test. Best wishes. ...Read more

1st time I got my dp shot it stopped my period. I took tetracycline & metronidazole & it came back. I stopped but I still get my period. How to stop?

Unpredictable: The bleeding patterns with depoprovera are unpredictable. You are right that for some in takes the period away. For others it causes irregular bleeding. There is no "normal" for Depo-Provera users. The longer you are on it the higher the chance of no periods. The Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud may be a better option for you if you want to avoid pregnancy and stop having periods. ...Read more

Can I take metronidazole 500 mg pills while on my period? Or should I wait until period ends? Can I have sex while taking this? It's for BV

Continue treatment: You should continue treatment while on your period. However, you shouldn't have sex for the next couple of weeks -- not because of metronidazole, but sex is associated with BV and might make treatment less effective. If sex is inevitable, for sure use condoms. I hope you were tested for STDs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonas), which are much more common in women with BV. ...Read more
