Can I Use Essential Oils To Help With Pain And Sleep
How safe is it to use essential oils and to sleep with a diffuser on? Could I be exposed to too much?
Very safe, possible: Essential oils tend to be very safe when inhaled by a diffuser. Problems are more likely if applied to skin (due to irritation) or if taken internally. But too much of anything can be hazardous and too inhaling too much essential oils could irritate your nose or lungs or cause nausea, headaches, dizziness or fatigue. The lavender oil per se is unlikely to be the cause for your congestion although the scent may potentially trigger sneezing and even a runny nose. The easiest way is to use another pillow not touched by lavender oil and see if the congestion goes away or not. ...Read more

Also, you want to ensure that your tympanic membrane does not become more inflamed. If it's so bad that you can't sleep, I'd suggest going to the ER to be evaluated, probably your best bet.
