If I use Afrin once a day every other day for 3 days how long would I have to wait to use it again before it causes rebound congestion?
I get severely congested only at night and the only thing that helps is afrin (oxymetazoline) which can only be used for 3 days and the cold 60 and under. Cause?
Humidifier: If you're using a heater, you might need a humidifier at night to moisten your mucosa. Otherwise you can ask you doctor if he can prescribe you a nasal corticosteroids such as Flonase combined with an antihistamine like allegra. If you don't suffer from heart disease and hypertension, a short course of oral decongestants like sudafed might help also. You can't use afrin more than 5 days. ...Read more
Had a bad cold and used afrin (oxymetazoline). On 5th day now. Only needed it once today unlike other days. Is it ok to still use tomorrow since I'm needing it less?
No: Stop the afrin immediately or you will develop rebound and rhinitis medicamentosa, a fancy name that will make your nose worse and breathing worse. Otc nasal sprays should only be used for 3 days. The cause of you nasal obstruction is usually a viral infection and saline irrigations are much more physiological and safer. ...Read more
Can intermittent use of Afrin cause rebound effect? I have read about use for more than 3-5 consecutive days but no information for taking a day or two off in between just one dose for one day. Have been using it this way for about a month.
Possibly: Use of Afrin the way you describe usually doesn't cause a significant rebound effect but everyone is different. If you have been using it for a month that way then it is a possibility that you could develop a rebound. You can use some fluticasone nasal spray one squirt each nostril once daily for awhile to help reduce the rebound effect. Need to get to why you are using the Afrin that much. See PCP ...Read more

Used afrin (oxymetazoline) then noticed acrid-like sensation/smell and it won't go away/ been 4 days stuffed up/ had hard time sleeping so tried the afrin (oxymetazoline)
This is a very hard question to answer, as there's not much research in this area, but I've heard this before with people who use afrin or sudafed (an oral decongestant). My feeling is that these medications overly dry out the nose (and your mucous), so it sticks around and festers. The other potential mechanism would be that the spray is directly irritating the nerve endings responsible for smell. We saw this with zycam spray (which rendered some without any sense of smell at all).
I'd recommend that you use lots of nasal saline spray to work on getting the stuff out of your nose. ...Read more
If I use afrin nasal spray as needed for nasal allergies for 3 days in a row, how long do I have to wait before it is ok to use afrin again?
My nose has been clogged up for 2 days now and I finally used a oxymetazoline nasal spray but it was expired should I be worried?
Toss it blow ur nose: Not because it's too old but because these type of inhalers will cause a rebound congestion much worse than the original problem and are thus highly addictive. They are actually recommended to be used for just two to three days which is unfortunately just long enough for this profound rebound congestion to develop as the drug wears off. Learn to blow your nose, it's far more effective. ...Read more
My 30 yo wife has a cold. She's on 300mg Effexor XR & 5mg Abilify (aripiprazole). She's normotensive (~110/65). Can she take both pseudoephedrine & Afrin for 3 days?
Is afrin safe to use for severe nasal congestion during third trimester of pregnancy? I am currently 33 weeks and a few days and need sleep! Thank you
If your BP is NML:
Afrin (oxymetazoline) contains a vasoconstrictor, which is to say that it constricts blood vessels. In women predisposed to this, especially in late pregnancy, it may cause a rise in your bp, that could make your doctor suspicious of developing preeclampsia.
In small amounts it should be safe, but I would suggest you try antihistamines (they sometimes help), and avoid the decongestants for the above reason. ...Read more
Deeply clogged sinuses, left ear pressure for 5 days. Used OTC sudafed and mucinex (guaifenesin) and Afrin, nothing is loosening mucous, no fever no swelling?
Tincture of time:
Tincture of time.
Use a humidifier or vaporizer.
Take long showers or -- very carefully -- breathe in steam from a pot on the stove.
Drink lots of fluids, which will thin out your mucus and may help prevent your sinuses from getting blocked up.
Use a nasal saline spray – simple unmedicated salt water – to help prevent your nasal passages from drying out. ...Read more
Not directly: If you use afrin for more than 3 days, you may develop what is called rhinitis medicamentosa or rebound. This is a condition wherein every time you inappropriately use the nasal drop or spray, the tissue becomes even more swollen. With enough swelling, you may develop anosmia or loss of smell. This leads then to an alteration of taste. Stop using afrin and have a doctor put you on steroids. ...Read more
