Months: It can take a long time to heal torn ligaments, especially in areas like the back that you really can't give full rest to. Think of football players that get turf-toe and it bothers them the entire season - it's very similar. I would highly recommend physical therapy if not doing it. Can help you with alternative ways to sit/move/lie to reduce stress on that area of back. ...Read more

Several : Several things can be occuring 1. A trigger thumb where the tendon gets transiently locked causing the distal joint ( near the nail) to become stuck. 2. A swollen joint from being contused ( in this cases it sounds like the mp joint) causing the joint to glide less fluidly 3. An injured collateral ligament at the ulnar aspect of the mp joint 4.
