Breast Cancer (Definition)

Breast cancer results when glandular cells lining the milk ducts and lobules of the human breast begin to grow in an unregulated manner. The growth occurs initially inside the ducts but eventually breaks outside into the breast tissue and ultimately spreads both to the lymph nodes in the armpit and via the bloodstream to other parts of the body. It is the most common malignancy in women but it often curable if found early and treated effectively with surgery, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy, or a combination thereof. Early detection before the malignancy becomes large enough to be felt depends on mammography/sonography and MRI imaging of the breast ...Read more

Starndard treatments: Standard treatments for breast cancer are based upon the stage (extent of confinement versus spread) of the disease. Please tell me, could you tell me 3 ways used to treat breast cancer and one weird alternative i.E vitamin d?

Please tell me, could you tell me 3 ways used to treat breast cancer and one weird alternative i.E vitamin d?

As for other cancers: Surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy. If you use vitamin d as an "alternative" to all three of these, you're a dead fool. Vitamin d deficiency might put a woman at greater risk for breast cancer (it does have some potent effects on cell growth) but as a treatment, i don't think so. New biologicals such as herceptin, and taxols, might be placed apart from chemo. Tumor lymphocytes are a novel rx. ...Read more

Ask ur doc: Vitamin d deficiency is quite common due to inadequate sun exposure. Although we give steroids with docetaxil but the doses and frequency is not enough to cause metabolic bone disease. Vitamind d deficiency can be corrected by supplement with high doses for few weeks to restore normal levels followed by maintenance doses to keep it at normal level. A calcium supplement should also be used. ...Read more

Should be safe but:: Nutritional support has been shown to both reduce the toxicity and improve effectiveness of chemotherapy. This should be safe but since I don't know which meds you will be given check this chart to be sure: http://tinyurl.com/lnmoojl Also see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17283738 and http://tinyurl.com/l9pdmjd A healthy diet is important too. Are all stage 1 breast cancer patients with no lymph node involvement recommended to take chemotherapy?

Are all stage 1 breast cancer patients with no lymph node involvement recommended to take chemotherapy?

No: Most important factors are tumor size, age and overall health, estrogen receptor status and her-2-neu status. In general, most young healthy people with a tumor greater than 1 cm will receive chemo and/or hormonal therapy. Smaller tumors are treated if er negative or her-2 positive. Some small er+ tumors are treated with chemo, but the relative benefits are smaller - an oncotype DX is helpful. ...Read more
