Addiction Can't Read: Sadly, many of my addiction patients got their start due to prescribed medications, some properly prescribed and, in other cases, over-prescribed' either in doseage or length of maintenance. This is why it is so important to follow the protocols on patient addiction potential and to use alternative forms of pain control as appropriate. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I am on 10MG daily prednisone for COPD and would like to get off this drug but ever time I try to reduce the amount I take my O2 goes to about 85%?
Reconciling goals: Would suggest tapering on your symptoms, specifically shortness of breath. Another way would be to taper less at a time, for example 1 mg and give yourself couple of days to look for worsening symptoms. Otherwise you are caught in between 2 numbers, your saturation and the amount of prednisone that eventually you will have to compromise between by either accepting a lower saturation or 10 mg dose ...Read more
I want to go on an ayahuasca retreat but I am on 40 mg of citalopram a day . How long do I have to stop the medication before I can interact with it?
At least 2 weeks: Ayahuasca can have very profound psychospiritual benefits & can help some people to overcome depression. However, as a MAO inhibitor it can have serious interactions with many drugs & one must also avoid many foods before using. Combining ayahuasca with citalopram can cause serotonin syndrome. Experts advise stopping citalopram for at least 2 weeks prior. See http://ayahuascasafety.org/?page_id=13 ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I have GERD how can I cure or control it without meds. I don't eat foods that aggravate it . I hate being on the meds for months at a time.
Tough: This is a very common problem without a great answer. Foods such as coffee, tea, peppermint, onions, garlic and carbonated beverages can worsen it. I would not eat anything 3 hours before you go to bed, keep the head of your bed up, and you may want to use sulcralfate, which is not absorbed and is totally safe. ...Read more

If I take a sleeping pill to help go to sleep on time as a start, will that help when I get off the pill to do it naturally? What can I do? Thank you
No: Sleeping pills should be used for only a brief time and for a stressful situation which is not normal. Sleeping pills alter the stages of sleep and quickly lose their efficacy creating "rebound insomnia" where one goes to seep briefly but then awakens and cannot sleep. The Stanford Sleep Center is a world expert on sleep and advises against sleeping pills. See their recommendations for more info. ...Read more
I took 1 50mg Zoloft pill. Can't sleep going on 2 days now. Can I take any over the counter sleep aids? Please help me as I have a newborn to tend to
Sleep aid = band-aid: Zoloft is known to occasionally cause this problem, particularly early on in treatment. I wouldn't provide you with advice, aside from directing you to your doctor: discuss the current dose, time of dosing or potentially dividing the dosing with your doctor. The potential of a switch to a less activating antidepressant could also take place with your doctor. Sleep aid is a band aid. ...Read more

Category C meds: Most of the antidepressants in use today are ssris. Most fall into the category c group, meaning there is no evidence of significant fetal injury. Some are more prone to problems with neonatal withdrawal symptoms than others so a shift in type of med during pregnancy may be proposed. Please don't do this: There is no such thing as "herbal antipsychotic." It won't work and potentially very dangerous (not studied by anyone so could be unsafe). There is high chance you will get very sick off your medication. If you are having problems or side effects from your antipsychotic, tell your doctor because there are many antipsychotics out there tha can make you feel better. ...Read more

How to distract myself when suffering from severe depression if you do not want to take pills on top of that?

Self-care routine -- set a times of the day for exercising, hobbies, reading, (doesn't have to be done all at once, but even 15min.), work on me time. Practice relaxation, positive visualizations -- you can find scripts on line or in the library. If you're being treated, stay compliant with treatment. Good luck! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
