Can I Take Metamucil With Medications
If you take metamucil/flaxseed too soon after taking medication, sweeping the meds thru the digestive tract too quickly, is there any risk of injury?
If you take Metamucil or flaxseed too soon after taking medication, sweeping them through the digestive tract too quickly, is there any risk of injury?
Not as you surmise: Metamucil and flaxseed in can reduce constipation in the same way any other natural or supplemental fiber does. Neither speed up intestinal transit time to any significant degree or cause injury in recommended doses. However, fiber can bind to certain medications, decreasing their absorption. As a general rule, you should separate fiber supplements from medication intake by two + hours.
12 to48 hours: It start working in 12 to 48 hours, but can take up to 3 days to work.
No: Metamucil (http://www. Metawellness. Com/en-us/articles/about-metamucil/digestive-health) is a brand of fiber. Don't fall for the advertising. Instead, eat plenty of fruit, veggies & unrefined whole grains, enough to consume 35-45g daily. Check out http://www. Webmd. Com/drugs/2/drug-13722/metamucil-oral/details for more info. And http://goo. Gl/8iAEA3 for info re dietary fiber in general.
Low FOD-MAP diet: The low fod-map diet identifies foods that may contribute to gassiness and bloating. Perhaps your future reduction of fod-map ingestants can be part of your greater effort toward healthier eating & drinking. Note that Metamucil may ferment in your gut to more gas. Be aware however that gassiness may be symptomatic of a bigger problem--see other HealthTap answers on the subject.
That's an easy one!: There is no substitute for fresh fruits & vegetables. No commercial fiber product can replicate the antioxidant, mineral, & vitamin benefits of produce. On the other hand, some people tolerate raw vegetables poorly with bloating, gasiness. For these people, or when vegetables may not be readily available, fiber supplements may suffice for bulk. Distinguish water soluble versus insoluble products.
Colace or Metamucil.: Same goal by different mechanism. Both taken daily as opposed to “as needed”. Metamucil is certainly worth a try if you don’t have any Colace.
Can you mix/take different fiber together? For example, Metamucil pills, and a wal-mart brand of fiber gummies?
Depends on symptoms: Metamucil is a bulk forming fiber supplement laxative. How many to take depends on your symptoms and your dietary fiber intake. I would shoot for 25 to 40 g of fiber a day in your diet. You can adjust the dosage of Metamucil to help you achieve symptom control. I would not go over 40 g a day total. Remember to stay hydrated, and to be wary of drug-food interactions. Good luck.
Yes its okay: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is a gentle laxative. Metamucil is a fiber supplement, and not really a laxative. A high fiber diet, including supplement like metamucil or generic equivalent, will keep your bms soft and regular. Use a laxative like MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) from time to time if you need some help. Once you get things moving, regular fiber only should suffice!
Wait for 2 hours: It is safe to take your vitamins 2 hours after taking metamucil for full absorption.
I'm taking Metamucil (psyllium fiber) for regularity - how much is the maximum one can take per day?
