Can I Take Claritin And Zyrtec At The Same Time
I get headaches from allergies. Can I take Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec at the same time? Claritin (loratadine) didn't work alone when I traveled away from home.
Yes, but: Both Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec (cetirizine) are new generation antihistamines. While there is no harm to using them together, there is likely no added benefit either. The most effective treatment for nasal allergies is the topical nasal steroid sprays such as qnasl, flonase, veramyst, nasonex, (mometasone) etc if a person doesn't have relief with an antihistamine alone. ...Read more
You shouldn't: All of those medications are in the same class called non-sedating antihistamines. They should not be taken at the same time. ...Read more
Zyrtec (cetirizine) loratidine: Yes but can get expensive and I wouldn't recommend it routinely. ...Read more
Not necessary: Both Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec are considered new generation antihistamines and have the same effects. If a person accidentally took these at the same time, there is likely no adverse effect, but there is really no need to take both for treatment of symptoms. If symptoms of allergies are not controlled, see an allergist for a better treatment plan. ...Read more
Yes: Antihistamines are well tolerated even when the dose is doubled or when one is taking 2 kinds of antihistamines. ...Read more
Allergy meds: Hello. Allergy medication like zyrtec and Claritin (loratadine) help with the symptoms of allergy. The dose for an adult is 10 mg for Claritin (loratadine) and 10 mg for zyrtec. If you take both on the same day, an increase in dryness as well as sedation will likely occur. There are other medications to help with your allergies. Instead of taking these two medications, see your doctor for other options. ...Read more

My MD once told me it takes 3--4 weeks for Allegra to actually work. Is this true? Is this the same for other allergy meds like Zyrtec and Claritin (loratadine)?

Is it bad to take Claritin (loratadine) d for an extended period of time? It's the only med that's worked for my congested nose. Zyrtec didn't help & was on it 1mo.
Decongestant: What you are responding to in Claritin (loratadine) d is the decongestant, but with time it loses effect and may predispose you to high blood pressure. You are better off consulting an allergist and getting proper treatment for your allergies especially that you also use an inhaler, the 2 are probably linked. ...Read more
Not the Standard:
Not really Zyrtec tablets and Claritin are usually once a day meds. They are 2 different antihistamines. Claritin does come in a 12 hour form. So you would take one in the am and one in the pm.
Certainly you could use both antihistamines but it is not usually the standard of care.
Thanks for your question

Both antihistamines: Both Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec are antihistamines. Each should last 24 hours for control of allergic rhinitis symptoms. However, some patients have more severe symptoms or may be using antihistamines for reasons other than allergic rhinitis and may require more frequent dosing of antihistamines including using Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec same day. Recommend this be done under allergist supervision. ...Read more
No additional benef: Since both of these meds work in very similar ways, there is likely to be very little additional benefit from using both, and much more likely to have side effects from the meds. If one alone is not working, talk to doc about what combination therapy may be more useful, including use of prescription med like Singulair (montelukast). Also need to delve into allergen prevention so you won't need as much meds. ...Read more

Several months I suffer from chronic congestion. Neither zyrtec or claritin (loratadine) helps. What to do or take next?
Can I take Claritin (loratadine) in the morning and zyrtec at night. Allergies are just that bad..
I'm taking zyrtec for severe case of hives. Was told to take Claritin (loratadine) in between if needed. I need more. Can I overdose if I take a second claritin (loratadine)?
Yes: Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec are both oral antihistamine agents that block the effects of histamine on what is called the h1 receptor. By doing this, they reduce the release of histamine, a substance that causes itching, runny nose, and sneezing. Zyrtec blocks the receptor a bit better, but the clinical effect of the medications is roughly the same. Zyrtec may cause some drowsiness, but may last longer. ...Read more
I took a zyrtec at 3 pm and it hasn't done much. The Zyrtec is labeled 24hr, but is it safe to take a 24hr Claritin (loratadine) D at 7am?
