Hello docs. I was wondering can you take Claritin and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at the same time?
Preferably no: Claritin should last approximately 24 hours, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) last about 3-4 hours. For usually treatment of allergic rhinitis or general allergy control most people do not need to take both at the same time. There are some circumstances where both may be taken on the same day but you should be followed and directed by an allergist if you are using so much antihistamines to control your symptoms. ...Read more

Can my 8 yr old child who has heart disease take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Claritin at the same time?
Overdoing It: No. Please do not do this. There is so much evidence in medicine that more is not better. One should not mix medications that are similar in nature unless instructed to do so by a doctor. One does not give a child both Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Claritin at the same time. ...Read more
Why should you?: Loratadine (Alavert, Claritin) is a mainly non-sedating antihistamine. Diphenhydramine is very sedating and affects the brain if if you don't feel sedated. In severe itching or welts, taking more that the recommended dose of antihistamines is acceptable. I would suggest you double-up on loratadine rather than adding the other and even then only if absolutely necessary. ...Read more

My 3 year old has allergies which I treat with Claritin, but now he has hives on his legs! Can I give him Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Claritin at the same time?
Yes: Those two medications work very differently on allergies, and it is ok short term for a few days to combine the two if you need to. Also make sure he gets plenty to drink as both of these tend to dry up mucous membranes and he may feel very thirsty. ...Read more

Can I take Claritin and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) together and drink it down with an alka-seltzer?
Maybe: Depending on what you are treating, I would space them out, take Claritin in the morning and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is sedating though, so be careful driving or operating machines. Not sure what you are treating though. I can see that with urticaria but for nasal allergies, I would use a nasal spray instead of a second antihistamine. Alka seltzer will only help pain because it has aspirin. ...Read more
No: Both are allergy medications, but not the same medication. ...Read more
Probably yes.: Many people report their 'daily' non-sedating antihistamine in the am does not provide relief until next am. So, if no concerns for gu/heart/bp/med-conflict issues, then they often take a 'sedating' antihistamine at night for continued symptom relief and 'bonus' of sleep aid effect. ...Read more
Not really: These are both antihistamines. If both are needed then physician guidance should be sought. ...Read more
Not recommended: Claritin is a slow release, non-sedating antihistamine. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a faster onset sedating antihistamine. Taking both will have additive effects and possible adverse effects such as sedation. It is not recommended that you take both of these without the guidance of your doctor. If the Claritin is not adequate for your symptoms, there are many other medications that can be prescribed to help. ...Read more
Antihistamines: They are both antihistamines, so I wouldn't take them together. They both act similarly, so their effect would be too much together. Wait until one wears off before trying the other, about 24 hours or so. ...Read more

Depends: They are both in the same family (antihistamines), but a few people have daytime symptoms so take non-sedating med (like loratadine) and its effect wears off before next day's dose, so take a sedating (/older) antihistamine (like benadryl) at bedtime for continued relief and to aid with sleep. If no heart / urinary / blood pressure issues and no other meds to conflict with, not likely a problem. ...Read more
Should be OK!:
adding one Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for symptom relief in addition to Claritin is acceptable. These drugs act through different mechanisms and should not cause any additive side effects. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a sedating antihistamine, which should come handy to fall asleep at night and have a good night's sleep and be ready for action the next day! Good luck. ...Read more

Won't help: If the problem is still congestion and pressure, antihistamines help mainly the itchy runny nose not the congestion, so you need a decongestant, but make sure your blood pressure is normal before using it, your Doctor would help you in that regard, meanwhile use saline nasal wash frequently, goodluck ...Read more
