What to do if I can still get strep throat if I don't have tonsils?

Yes: A tonsillectomy removes the prominent palatine tonsils on either side of the back of the throat. However, there is tonsil like tissue located in patches around the throat and roof of the throat. That and the rest of the throat tissue can become inflamed with a strep infection. Removal can reduce the intensity of symptoms but does not eliminate the risk of strep. ...Read more

Should I get my tonsils out if I keep getting strep throat?

Yes: If recurrent cultures of the tonsils, when infected, demonstrate streptococcus and you are significantly ill and it occurs 3 to 4 times a year, you should have a tonsillectomy. Rarely, but definitely, the recurrence of true strep tonsillitis may lead to heart or kidney disease. I believe this rare but potential danger should motivate you to have surgery on the tonsils. ...Read more

Why for the past few years do I get strep throat 3+ times a year when I don't have tonsils? Possible causes?

Why for the past few years do I get strep throat 3+ times a year when I don't have tonsils? Possible causes?

Strep or not strep?: Germs can infect the walls of your throat, even when you don't have tonsils. Cold viruses can cause a sore throat, so 3+ episodes of these a year are common. If you have true streptococcus bacterial infections (verified by testing) often, you or a member of your household may be a carrier. That is, your immune system lets strep bacteria live like squatters in your throat, instead of killing them. ...Read more

I have been getting strep throat 1-2 times a yr since I was 14 and I am 19 now. Can I get my tonsils removed on that alone??

Discuss with doctor.: An ENT (ear, nose and throat/otolaryngologist) specialist would be the best one to help make that determination. Usually 7 strep infections in a year or obstructive sleep apnea are stronger indications for performing a tonsillectomy, but each patient should be evaluated on a case by case basis. Ask your primary physician for a referral to the specialist, if you don't know of one. ...Read more

I constantly get strep throat about 3 to four times a year. Can removing my tonsils help prevent step throat? What are other things I can do to stop it

Yes and no: The removal of the palatine tonsils can reduce the "intensity" of illness when you get strep in the future, but it does not prevent you from getting it. After the tonsils are removed, there are still tissues and glands in the throat that can become infected, with the same risk of immune mediated complications. ...Read more

How commun is rheumatic Fever from untreated strep throat? Also, is it still possible to contract strep throat after having the tonsils removed?

I had strep throat 10 days ago. Went to doc was given a penicillin shot think bicillin felt better 2 days later but still have small pus on tonsils? ?

Strep throat: Even though you have been treated the pus is signed of dead cells and as long as the rest of the symptoms are resolving or completely resolved does not mean the infection is not better. I would wait a couple of days and if every other symptoms is resolved this should go away soon. If the symptoms are the same or worse you might need an alternative antibiotic. ...Read more

Strep throat a month ago. Took zpak, feel better, no pain now, still white patches in throat&right side tonsils look weird&struggle w plugged ear. Why?

Tonsils post-infx: It sounds like the infection cleared up ok (azithromycin is not my favorite drug for strep, it works ok), but you have more concern about chronic changes present in your tonsils and that is what is likely affecting your ear as well. If this is a one time thing, i'd give it another 4-8 weeks as long as you're feeling ok. If you have had chronic problems with recurrent tonsil/throat, time to see ent. ...Read more

Rule of thumb: I tell my patients if they are not better, much better, in 48 hours, likely the medicine is not working. So in 2 days and you still have problem go back to your doctor. We say that as we don't want our patients to have complications of a disease left untreated properly. ...Read more

It happens: Did they verify the strep with a test? Was the shot a penicillin based drug? I got moderate to severe sore throat what is the signs of strep throat without tonsils I don't have a fever yet I wasn't exposed to strep?

Same as with: There is plenty of tissues within the throat, including residual lymph gland tissue, to get sore during a throat infection. Removal of tonsils does not eliminate risk of strep throat but can reduce intensity. Symptoms are the same. Since 5-10% of people carry strep year round with no symptoms you are likely exposed pretty often. Only a proper evaluation with strep test can sort this out. ...Read more

Symptoms of strep throat if you don't have tonsils?

Symptoms of strep throat if you don't have tonsils?

Essentially the same: Strep throat is strep throat--a bacterial infection due to exposure to a specific germ called streptococcus. Headache, sore throat, red throat, swollen lymph nodes of the neck, nausea, vomiting, generalized achiness or malaise, even a fine sandpapery red rash known as scarletina can occur whether one has tonsils or not. Admittedly the chance of strep throat seems less after tonsillectectomy. ...Read more

What does strep throat look like in children without tonsils?

Hard to say: I wouldn't think about a "look" of strep in the throat. It can be hard to predict sometimes by looking. Instead, if a child has a sore throat with a fever in the absence of cold symptoms like cough and runny nose, they should be checked for strep. Whether or not they have tonsils, they can also have headache, abdominal pain, vomiting and/or rashes. ...Read more
