Can I Put Vicks In Humidifier
Not recommended: In the cool mist humidifiers which are recommended now, the Vicks will just clog up the system. Hot steam vaporizers are not recommended around children at all due to the risk of burns. The Vicks doesn't "cure" the cold, and isn't necessarily effective. Increased moisture in the air is the main thing that helps your child feel better. ...Read more

I don't advise it: This product is marketed with the idea that stinky medicine smell is therapeutic. It replicates the aroma therapy indian tribes uses in sweat lodges with pine pitch. I don't recommend it for kids under 2 as the smell often aggravates congestion. ...Read more
We don't use oil.: As a pediatrician, we do not recommend the use of eucalyptus oil in a humidifier. Just the cool water mist seems to be effective enough to help loosen most head or chest congestion in my patients. If you or your child are truly suffering more serious respiratory or head congestion than this might best be managed by an office visit. Don't suffer any longer. You deserve better than that. For young infants, : Put a cool must humidifier across the room up to a maximum of 50% humidity, because, in theory, you could overload them with water if it's too close. I guess that's probably 7-9 feet in most bedrooms. Keep the humidifier & its cord up where a 6-month-old & older can't pull it over. Run it with a 10% Clorox solution to clean it when baby's not in the room, followed by a cycle of fresh water. ...Read more
Air con seems to be to dry for 8 mth baby, is it better to put humidifier in the room? Will it help baby with sensitive nose?
Humidify: Central air runs through the same forced air ducts as winter heat does. It's very dry, even when there is a central humidifier attached. In-window air conditioners also tend to dry the air especially if the house is tight & well insulated. So yes a good humidifier would be helpful. Saline nasal spray before and after sleep is also very effective. Use the ones made for babies. ...Read more
Age ??: Early infancy is marked by marked sensitivity to irritants ; dependence on narrow nasal passages for breathing. Later childhood employs mouth breathing to bypass much of the congestion. I hate Vicks steam; consider it air pollution. A lifestyle audit to eliminate any odors/irritants in a kids sleeping area + humidity or steam as long as the measured humidity. ...Read more

I put Vicks liquid vapor in my 9 month old humidifier now sometimes she has a cough that makes her gasp for air. Or could it be my moms smoking?
Hi! My 1 year old has RSV. She was prescribed albuterol via nebulizer. We have a humidifier with a little cup on the top for Vicks liquid I believe, would it be possible to put the albuterol in the cup on her vaporizer to administer her nighttime treatme
Yes: This is a very nice way to improve the humidity and also help decongest a baby without giving them medications. Don't forget the baby can use nasal saline drops too if congested. Put a couple of drops in the nose, gently massage, and then if he or she doesn't sneeze them out, use the bulb suctioner to clear out. Remember lots of cuddles too when baby not feeling well. ...Read more

My baby has a bad cough that won't let her sleep. I put vapor rub on her chest and have a cool mist humidifier on for her. Any suggestions?
Needs investigation: Chronic cough in a young child that is waking them up needs investigation. If it is not an infection, it could be an inhaled foreign body (I've seen toy parts, foods, etc). Also, high on the list is also environmental irritants such as smoke, dust, molds and then allergens causing the cough. One of the most frequent symptoms of early asthma in tots is that ongoing night cough! ...Read more
