I have high uric acid in my blood, 8.45. Doctor prescribed me Allopurinol. How long should I use it to lower my uric acid? Thank you.
Hyperuricemia: While (very painful) gout is due to high uric acid levels, asymptomatic hyperuricemia (high levels w/o symptoms of disease) is not a disease per se. Colchicine: Colchicine alone is effective in diminishing gout. Yes. Allopurinol is not mandatory but of course helps. Also, avoid alcohol, animal fats, organ meats and shellfish. Yes: Allopurinol has been around for many years and has proven to be safe and effective for high uric acid levels. I believe 100mg daily is a low dose. Up to 600mg per day can be taken. Elevated uric acid-: - (gout), runs in families if you have minimal symptoms consider yourself lucky. The potential is there for a full blown gouty attack. Unlikely to help: If you do not want medication, try not eat too much meat especially red meat, shell fish, avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water. Yes: Gout is caused by your body's poor handling of proteins called purines. A diet low in purines certainly helps. Also, stay well hydrated. This helps prevent uric acid kidney stones as well as reduces joint attacks. Anecdotally, cherry juice seems to help as well.
