How much do you have to drink to get cirrhosis of the liver?

How much do you have to drink to get cirrhosis of the liver?

Not universal: Not all patients who drink heavily develop alcoholic liver disease. However, the doctor can undoubtedly warn the patient who already has any form of alcoholic liver disease that continued alcohol use virtually guarantees that the disease will persist and likely worsen. Although many variables come into play, I believe a rough estimate of a chronic, heavy drinker getting cirrhosis is 30-40%. ...Read more

Husband has liver fibrosis bridging cirrhosis but stopped drinking. Takes lactulose and stopped drinking three months ago. Will disesase get better?

Hoping so!: I'm going to assume that alcohol is the sole cause, and that he's been checked for hemochromatosis, Wilson's, and hepatitis B and C. If he does choose to stop drinking, having a loving and forgiving wife will be the most wonderful support he can have. Cirrhosis does regress some on achieving sobriety. Hopefully his mind is still basically okay. Wishing you both the best. ...Read more

How do you prevent cirrhosis of the liver from alcohol if you just drink socially?

How do you prevent cirrhosis of the liver from alcohol if you just drink socially?

Don't drink alcohol: The best prevention from alcohol induced liver damage that can lead to cirrhosis is NOT to drink alcohol, even socially. Drinking "socially" to you might mean something different to someone else regarding the amount of alcohol intake per week. In general, if you have been diagnosed with chronic liver disease and fibrosis or scarring of your liver, abstinence from alcohol will be the key. ...Read more

My aunt has cirrhosis of the liver and is in her final stange, but she continues to drink vodka, how can I help her? How much longer will she live?

Not long: On the outside - under a year and I believe that is for people who have stopped drinking. It may be very painful too and there is simply nothing I can find to say that is hopeful. Hospice is the thought I have and their experience with palliative care will be a big help to make the last months as good as possible. If you can, try to enjoy your time together and let a pro deal w/ the hard stuff. ...Read more

Can cirrhosis of the liver affect someone's lungs? My mother in law, has affected liver and kidneys from drinking but now her breathing is affected?

Can cirrhosis of the liver affect someone's lungs? My mother in law, has affected liver and kidneys from drinking but now her breathing is affected?

Yes: In the late stages of liver failure, hepatopulmonary syndrome is to be expected. Lung vessels dilate too much to be well-oxygenated. The heart may also be failing making her short of breath, or an enlarged liver or fluid in the abdomen may be compressing the lungs from below. I'm sorry about your mom and I hope that you are a comfort to her now. Best wishes. ...Read more

Stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver my stepmother lives with me and is in stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver. She was a heavy drinker (no longer drinking) and a prescription drug abuser. I take Xanax for anxiety. She has told me that her doctor said it was okay if

You give her yours?: Don't believe it. No ethical or competent physician would ever tell anyone to take someone else's medication. People with histories of alcohol are at very high risk of abusing benzos, and especially xanax, (alprazolam) which has a very high abuse potential. If a doctor wants to prescribe anti-anxiety agents for her, there are far safer ones for her, and she needs to get her own medication from her own md. ...Read more
