Risk of colon preps: You are appropriately concerned about risks of colon preps. Regardless of type (lavage & osmotic agents, irritant laxatives, enemas) consideration should be given to: age, size, co-morbidlities, nutritional & hydration debilities, mobility, & help at home. Up to 50% may have nausea, vomiting, fullness/bloating, anal irritation. Greater risks result from fluid & electrolyte imbalance. Talk w/doctor. ...Read more

Two days fasting / preparing before colonoscopy/endoscopy and now three days constipated. What should I do? Should I take laxative?

Two days fasting / preparing before colonoscopy/endoscopy and now three days constipated. What should I do? Should I take laxative?

Not sure: Your colon was likely cleaned out completely for the procedure. Not going to the bathroom is not really constipation as its defined by hard bowel movement with lots of straining involved. Unless you have abd pain or distention I wouldn't be too worried about it. Try some prune juice and if that doesn't help you can try over the counter miralax (polyethylene glycol). If you have hist of constip start taking a stool softe. ...Read more

I had a colonoscopy yesterday and was told I should poop in 2 days. It seems every time I eat or drink I have to poop now. Is this normal?

Yes: Yes, it can be normal because of the fluid you had to drink before the colonoscopy. This fluid cleans the inside of your colon by causing loose bowel movements. It sounds like you still have some in your colon. It should work its way out in a couple of days. ...Read more

Severe diarrhea for 10+ days. After eating, food goes right through. Can barely eat. Had IVs. Colonoscopy was fine. Any recos for help?

NoFood Usually Works: Only consume clear fluids without any sugar, fats or proteins until no diarrhea 2-3 days. This works & is routinely used in hospitals for all sorts of gastrointestinal problems. Hospitals add nasogastric suction for higher/faster efficacy but then IV fluids are required to maintain hydration. After diarrhea stopped restart small amounts liquid foods. Fasting=healthy, burns fat, though not popular. ...Read more

My dad had a colonoscopy 2 days ago some polyps were removed, today his stool was dark. Should he go to see a doctor or urgent care?

Melena: Hi Jeni MH, it is not uncommon to have dark stools with blood (melena) after a colonoscopy and polyp removal. It should subside in a few days as the sites heal. If it continues, becomes bright red, or if he has symptoms of weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, or appears pale, then a trip to his doctor is a good idea. Hope that's helpful. ...Read more

Yes: Chronic constipation that does not get better with reasonable changes to your diet and water intake should be explored further.
