Other possibilities.: The Thyroid is not the only endocrine gland that affects metabolism, mood, menstrual cycles and hair follicle activity in women your age. It's quite possible that you are experiencing peri-menopause, or that you have Vitamin D deficiency. Has the enlargement of the thyroid gland been confirmed/examined with ultrasound? Partial replacement: When hypothyroidism is diagnosed, there is often residual thyroid functioning so full replacement is not needed as is the case for congenital absence of the thryoid gland. The causes of hypothyroidism are varied and not always identified. Hashimotos is one type of autoimmune condition that can result in minimal to significant underfuntioning. Labs look ok: Your current lab don't seem to show any signs of hypothyroidism, but the condition may be hereditary so I would still check labs periodically maybe once every year. Interestingly if your mother grew up in japan she may have had some degree of radiation exposure if she was a young child in 1945. Children's thyroid glands are very sensitive to radiation and this may have produced her condition. Hey TSH less than five is unlikely to cause symptoms of hypothyroidism. ...Read more

Can low dopamine levels cause cardiac dysfunction? Thanks. I have read that low dopamine levels are related to parkinsons--one of the symptoms being autonomic dysfunction. Could this include cardiac problems--racing, pounding, palpitations?

Unlikely: Low dopamine levels in Parkinson's Disease are specifically related to loss of dopamine producing neurons in the Basal Ganglia of the brain and does not show up on regular blood testing.
