Uncommonly yes: I'm not sure WHICH medication you're referring to but if we just hazard a guess and say, "LEVOTHYROXINE" then, in rare instances this medication has been reported to cause mental depression in patients. Typically though, when used in therapeutic doses to treat hypothyroidism one usually experiences a bit of a lift in mood (if they've been truly HYPO-thyroid) for some time. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Possibly: Low thyroid levels affect every part of your body, including your brain. Depression can occur with hypothyroidism, not usually anxiety, though anxiety is common in general. I do not think the exact mechanism is known for why hypothyroidism causes depression, but probably involves changes in neurotransmitter levels. ...Read more

Similar: The symptoms of clinical depression vs. Hypothyroid depression are very similar but the treatments are different. Can hypothyroidism cause mental fogginess? I am also gettinf depressed and agitated for not sleeping.
Yes, it's 1 cause: Hypothyroidism can cause a feeling of mental sluggishness and "fogginess, " as well as depression. That's why the workup of someone who presents with depression, needs to include physical exam plus studies of thyroid function -- as well as multiple other areas too. Disturbed sleep makes it all worse. Please see your doctor for evaluation, and don't rely on herbal supplements alone for help. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I frequently have bouts with depression that i cannot explain. Can this be related to my medical condition, I have hypothyroidism for the last 2 years or longer, I have experienced mood swings that last for a few hours the change. I have been hypothyroid
I'm : I'm so glad you're sharing your question with the avvo readership, as it raises several important issues: 1) an accurate diagnosis is the most important thing right now. It's extremely important that you go to a psychiatrist who will take time to sort out the issues at hand. 2) at age 52, hormonal changes occur that can lead to unpredictable mood swings. If your period has become unpredictable, you may be perimenopausal. If so, there are treatments that can help with these accompanying symptoms. 3) it would be easy to see if you need a change in your thyroid hormone dose by doing a blood test. Your doctor has probably already done this, but it's good to ask him or her. However, what do you feel like when you say, "your body cannot produce enough of the hormone?" are you tired, cold, sleeping poorly, concentrating poorly, noticing changes in your weight and appetite? To be more specific with your symptoms will be very helpful to your doctor, and if you see a psychiatrist for further clarification, to that person as well. Thanks for sending this question in. I hope this answers was helpful. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Read a lot: The more you read about each of the conditions the better off you will be (generally speaking). Best to stay out of the chat rooms as you can easily get misinformed. Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and other big clinics have excellent patient oriented materials on line. I like Wikipedia as it goes into some detail and is free of commercial bias. You can easily cross reference medical terms. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
