Tested negative twice for HIV at 13 and 14 months post exposure. I now have Tonsillitis. Do I need to be worried?

Depends.: If you have not had any unsafe sex since, you are at very low risk of any std causing this. You are more likely to have other causes, like a virus, inc. mono, or strep, Get checked for strep, because if you have it, and don't treat it, you are at risk of developing rheumatic fever. If you have practiced unsafe sex, then you have to worry about stds again! ...Read more

I am HIV positive and believe I have tonsillitis. If I am prescribed antibiotics, are there any with dangerous reactions to my ARV medication?

Often, yes: Every ARV regimen has a set of interactions. Most of them are not immediately dangerous but can alter metabolism of either your ARV or the other medication and many require dose adjustments or alternate medication choices. Any physician who prescribes an antibiotic to a patient on other medications (ARV or others) should check for and consider such interactions when choosing the antibiotic. ...Read more

When you go to clinic and do blood test for things like tonsillitis, can they see if you have hiv?

It depends: Some clinics are more sensitive to the possibility that an infection could potentially be HIV infection. Often you will be told (or asked) if someone is thinking about doing an HIV test. If you are concerned, it is ok to request a test. The cdc recommends that everyone (teenagers through adults) gets tested for HIV so don't be shy. ...Read more

Oral what?: When I was resident at a county hospital, we treated what appeared to be an outbreak of oral gonorrhea amongst people your age with the same symptoms who had oral sex (culture confirmed). There are still some unanswered questions- mainly the thought that a healthy immune system should prevent this. But for what it's worth, I thought I would mention this experience with a clinical "zebra." ...Read more

Why am I always getting strep or tonsillitis, this is the 2nd time I've gotten it this yr, is it cause I live with older people?

Possibly: Usually its the other way around. That is, young children frequently become ill because they attend day care where many children harbor viral infections. At age 53 most people do not become infected with bacteria as often as children. However, I see adults at your age with tonsillitis but rarely. I do not think that living with older people is commonly a reason for frequent infections. ...Read more
