Hi, I have consistently low ferritin, high RBC and today deficient calcium. Could this be contributing to my 3 year history of hair loss?

Hi, I have consistently low ferritin, high RBC and today deficient calcium. Could this be contributing to my 3 year history of hair loss?

Yes: Insufficient iron stores as measured by ferritin levels is strongly associated with hair loss in women. It is important to measure ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate, or esr) when checking ferritin, as an apparent "normal" ferritin can be misleading if the ESR is high. Both are what are known as "acute phase reactants", meaning that in the presence of inflammation, they will be elevated. ...Read more

Hair Loss (Definition)

Hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia, can be caused by different reasons, including damage to the hair shaft or follicles or fungal infections. There are two main types of alopecia. Alopecia areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair to fall out. Androgenetic (or androgenic) alopecia, on the other hand, is an inherited form of hair loss. With alopecia areata, hair can fall out in patches all over the body. With androgenetic alopecia, hair on the head first thins and then falls out. In men, this is called male pattern hair loss; in women, it is called ...Read more

Does high billirubin levels cause hair loss?

Does high billirubin levels cause hair loss?

No: Look for another cause for your hair loss -- if it's not a normal man's progressive baldness, consider a thyroid check, a scalp fungus, telogen effluvium and alopecia areata. If your high bilirubin is isolated and unconjugated and you feel well, chances are it's gilbert's non-disease and won't affect in in any way. ...Read more

Will low iron levels cause hair loss?

Yes, iron deficiency: Can result in hair loss. Other common symptoms are pica (craving eating ice or dirt), headaches, fatigue and shortness of breath with exercise. An over the counter iron supplement taken every day along with Vitamin C to aid with absorption should help. Talk with your doctor to find out why you are iron deficient, and work on resolving the underlying cause as well. Best wishes to you! ...Read more

Eating food high in fat, sugars and carbs is bad for skin and causes hair loss?

Eating food high in fat, sugars and carbs is bad for skin and causes hair loss?

No: You need to stop reading disinformation websites. Now, people tend to overeat greasy and sugary stuff and that's how they get fat. The public therefore comes to believe that this stuff is "bad for you" and people are ready to believe that is causes other problems as well. In fact, acne & most other skill trouble is mostly unrelated to diet, and balding is hereditary. ...Read more

Hair loss: Difficult to answer because you apparently have "hair loss due to change in hormone levels." Puberty is usually complete by age 25 and change in hormone levels at age 25 is uncommon. Low parathyroid level can this cause hair loss?

Low parathyroid level can this cause hair loss?

Haven't heard of it: Haven't heard of hypoparathyroidism causing hair loss, but sometimes autoimmune disease is the cause of low parathyroid, and some autoimmune diseases can cause hair loss. A primary care doctor and an endocrinologist can investigate to see if a person's hair loss and hormonal issues are related. Of course, the two problems can also be in the same patient just by coincidence. ...Read more

Is a Ferritin level of 14 low enough to cause symptoms of hair loss & bruising?

No: Ferritin is not related to hair loss or bruising. However, your ferritin and by inference iron stores are low and you should take oral iron supplement with multivitamins. Women lose iron in menstrual blood and are not uncommonly iron deficient. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. I keep reading that excessive drinking can raise estrogen levels in a woman and in turn cause hair loss, is this accurate?

Really: Metabolism of alcohol does not directly affect steroid hormone production or metabolism; alcohol consumption that leads to weight gain "may" increase estradiol levels somewhat. Elevated estrogen levels in NO way cause hair loss. Hope this helps you! ...Read more

I read some meds can break down collagen in hair follicles and cause hair loss. Any foods to eat to help build levels up to promote hair regrowth?

I read some meds can break down collagen in hair follicles and cause hair loss. Any foods to eat to help build levels up to promote hair regrowth?

Internet fantasy: There's not even any collagen worth speaking of in hair follicles. I've been looking at them under the microscope for a half a century. This stuff is made up by "natural healing folks" who pretend to be your friends. A few meds can produce hair loss but this isn't due to collagen problems. Further, food choices aren't the key to managing this or the vast majority of other health issues. Cheers. ...Read more
