My boyfriend of a year has a herpes cold sore on his lip and he says he has never had it before. I don't have the virus. Can hsv-1 be dormant for years and suddenly outbreak?

Absolutely: Most people are infected with oral hsv as children and can indeed lay dormant for years and then emerge. You may even have it and not realize it, unless you have had antibody testing that is negative. Also, oral herpes and genital herpes are two separate viruses so this doesn't necessarily mean that he has been unfaithful or performed oral sex on someone else or anything of the sort. ...Read more

I: I think you are referring to hsv (herpes simplex virus) type 2. This type usually affects the genitals but can be found in other locations. This is a very tricky virus, meaning one could have been exposed to it, contracted it and never had a herpes outbreak. Therefore it is very hard to determine when it was contracted. If you have tested negative (blood test) for hsv type 2 then there is no way you gave it to him. Also know that if you want to protect yourself from contracting the virus, you will have to use condoms.
Take care. ...Read more

Can they pick up dormant herpes 2 on a test?

Can they pick up dormant herpes 2 on a test?

Yes: Blood tests can diagnose herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), the usual cause of oral herpes, and HSV2, the main cause of genital herpes. Have an IgG antibody test only. IgM testing often done but is unreliable, often misleading, not recommended by herpes experts. But beware: even IgG testing can be misleading. Get tested only if recommended by a doctor experienced in herpes and testing for it. ...Read more

In the ganglia: Which is a bundle of nerve tissue that contains the body of nerve cells. It acts as a relay station between central and peripheral nervous system. That's where the virus lives. Has any work or research been done to eradicate herpes zoster virus that lies dormant in the nervous system?

Herpes zoster: Basic science research on varicella zoster virus (VZV, the cause of chickenpox and shingles) and on other herpes viruses may someday give answers on this, but don't hold your breath: you should assume your infection will be lifelong. Happily, recurrent zoster/shingles is fairly uncommon, can be largely prevented by the VZV vaccine, and easily treated. It's an easy problem to live with. Good luck! ...Read more

HSV2 igg 1.5 IGM neg no s/s of infection. Never lesions, Thoughts. False (+) or (+) genital herpes infection. Virus dormant like HSV1? any worries

Maybe false positive: Edited, correcting a misunderstanding in my initial reply: Most HSV2 IgG tests, e.g. HerpeSelect®), are officially positive at ELISA ratio 1.1 or higher. However, it is reliably positve only at 3.5 or higher. With your value of 1.5, there's at least a 50:50 chance you do NOT have HSV2, despite the test result. Speak with your doctor about confirmatory testing, e.g. Western blot test. ...Read more

Since herpes is dorment how soon would I be able to be tested if the condom broke during?

6 weeks: I would give it 6 weeks post exposure to take a blood test to see if you've been exposed to the virus. If you had a lesion, you can be tested right away, but from your question, it seems you want to know how long it takes for your body to make antibodies to determine if you've been exposed. You can take a test now, to see if you've been exposed prior to that incident and then again in 6 weeks. ...Read more

My husband first wife has herpes but he had no symptom or signs. They had divorced for 12 years now. Could my husband got it but not flare up?

Possibly: Asympomatic (no or few/mild symptoms) carriers do exist but since transmission is most likely when an infected person's open sores contact the delicate mucus membrane tissue of another person. It's rarely been known to transfer from a non-symptomatic individual, but he can have a (not perfect) test. Info: http://goaskalice. Columbia. Edu/testing-asymptomatic-herpes
