My boyfriend has IgA kidney disease, can he take acyclovir for genital herpes? If so what mg?

He needs a physician: Acyclovir can cause renal damage. As your boyfriend already has kidney disease, the dose of Acyclovir needs to be based on his renal function. Most importantly; does he really need it? Under any circumstances, this kind of problem can't be addressed here any further. ...Read more

What could be the cause of enlarged lymph nodes before and during the time of my period? Recurring with sore lower back. Genital herpes?

What could be the cause of enlarged lymph nodes before and during the time of my period? Recurring with sore lower back. Genital herpes?

Probably not herpes: Herpes rarely if ever causes lymph node inflammation without an obvious outbreak of genital area blisters, sores, etc. Even then, lymph node involvement is rare in recurrent herpes, only during the first infection. Finally, genital herpes doesn't cause back pain, and rarely recurs as often once a month -- usually no more often than every 2-3 months. Discuss w/ your doctor if the problem continues. ...Read more

I recently found out I have genital herpes but i also have kidney failure. What can I expect?

I recently found out I have genital herpes but i also have kidney failure. What can I expect?

Unrelated: The kidney failure is unrelated and needs assessment. If your kidney function is more than 60% not you likely are ok. If less, given your age, it needs evaluation. The genital herpes is unrelated, but treatment doses will need to be adjusted for degree of kidney function to avoid kidney injury from the meds. ...Read more

Recurrent shingles with Post-Herpetic Neuralgia between outbreaks? There is a lot more to it but not enough space here.....?

Recurrent shingles with Post-Herpetic Neuralgia between outbreaks? There is a lot more to it but not enough space here.....?

Maybe HSV, not VZV: Shingles rarely recurs so frequently but HSV does, and recurrent herpes simplex can look identical to zoster. 1) Retest next outbreak to confirm varicella zoster virus (VZV), and PCR test for HSV. 2) Have an HSV IgG antibody test, expecting maybe positive for HSV1. 3) Continue valacylovir to prevent recurrences, whatever the cause. As others have advised, it is nontoxic and harmless, so why not? ...Read more

I have been getting blistery sores on my lower back, whenever I eat tomatoes, or citris foods. Is this herpes or cold sores?

Could be herpes: I have heard of citrus type foods triggering a herpes outbreak. You can also get skin irritation from citric acid if it touches your skin and then you are out in the sun. However, it could all just be a coincidence and your rash could be many other things. There is medication for it if it is herpes, so may worth it to get checked. You can always take a pic of it and show it to your doc later. ...Read more

I had protected sex with woman with hsv2 5 week ago. I have lower back pain and itch on butt.been feeling it 4 a few weeks. Is this a sign of herpes?

Low risk, no worries: Herpes doesn't cause low back pain or "itch on butt". The chance of HSV2 from one episode of unprotected vaginal sex with infected partner is around 1 in a thousand. With condom protection, it's still lower. Don't worry about this. Also, look at it this way: If you've had sex with say 20 different women, you can assume 3-10 of them had HSV2. The one partner you knew about isn't anymore risky. ...Read more

How long does tingling happen before first outbreak of herpes. I get itching neck pain lower back pain now tingling for over 4 days now?

How long does tingling happen before first outbreak of herpes. I get itching neck pain lower back pain now tingling for over 4 days now?

This isn't herpes: For initial herpes, usually no tingling before sores appear. Tingling is mainly a symptom of recurrent herpes; in that case, it lasts only a day or two before the outbreak itself shows up. Your symptoms don't sound at all like herpes, which doesn't cause tingling without sores and rarely if ever causes low back pain. So good news, this isn't herpes. See your doctor if symptoms continue. Good luck! ...Read more

After full exam doctor diagnosed mild case of shingles on lower back. I'm still paranoid it was misdiagnosed and is herpes simplex — should I be?

Shingles: Shingles is part of herpes family of viruses so you don't need to be paranoid. You actually do have herpes. Herpes Zoster, specifically. The term Symplex really prefers to type one which is found in the mouth and type two which is found in the genitalia. However, these viruses are all essentially related and affect different parts of the body. ...Read more

Enlarged lymph nodes in groin and sore lower back every so often. Is this genital herpes symptoms?

Probably not herpes: Recrurrent genital herpes doesn't cause enlarged lymph nodes. This happens from herpes only once, during the intitial infection, and in that case there would be painful blisters or sores. And herpes doesn't cause lower back pain. You'll need to look elsewhere for the cause of these symptoms. Good luck! ...Read more

I was just dx with old granulomatous disease per CT scan. Could this be caused from my 35 yr history of genital herpes?

Not herpes related: Herpes, genital or otherwise, doesn't cause anything like this. These are entirely unrelated problems. Many past infections could cause "old granulomatous disease" detected by chest Xray or CT, and most cases like this turn out not to be serious. But don't take the chance -- follow your doctor's advice about further evaluation. But don't worry at all about herpes. Good luck! ...Read more
