HYDRATE: I suspect you are under hydrated. The colon's function is to pull excess fluid from the body waste. If you are under hydrated, your stool will become very firm. Depends: If you get side effects, you get them. Every patient is different. If you aren't already, you should be on fiber supplements 2-3 times a day, plenty of fluids (apple juice is wonderful) and lots of fruit and veggies. Use vaseline down below.
