Iron deficiency: Yes and no. If the lady has low iron stores which is the case in 50% of young women then periods which if heavy can further stress the iron stores and contribute to further iron deficiency and anemia down the road . If some one has adequate iron stores then periods per se should not cause low iron levels . But anemia or iron deficiency is what I suspect here. Iron supplementation may be needed. ...Read more

Further, most teen girls don't get enough iron in their diet to overcome the monthly loss of blod, so those two things combined complicate things even more.
