Sometimes your: colon and intestine secrete some mucous. If this is too much this is not a desired condition. But mucousy stools are usually associated more with diarrhea then constipation. Are you getting enough fiber in your diet? Does anybody else in your family have colon problems? Have you taken a lot of antibiotics? These are some of the questions a doctor would ask to evaluate this for you. ...Read more

Can mild constipation (going 3x per wk) cause fecal odor that's bad in public/when stressed but better at rest? Other cause? Have veg & water in diet.

Can mild constipation (going 3x per wk) cause fecal odor that's bad in public/when stressed but better at rest? Other cause? Have veg & water in diet.

Possibly: Try eating unpasteurized yogurt three times a day or taking a probiotic and adding some otc fiber additive to take daily. This will bulk up the stool, and change the nature of bacteria in gut which will alter the odor. If this does not work see a GI doctor. If the constipation is of recent onset, get checked for thyroid function. ...Read more

Can an intestinal obstruction cause Diarreah?? I've been having terrible constipation even with Miralax (polyethylene glycol) and now Diarreah but it's pure water??

Post obstructive di?: The obstruction causes constipation, but once the treatments work (& the obstruction resolves) often patients experience post-obstructive diarrhea. The body adjusts to relief by producing excess fluid & moving fluid through faster for a period of time before it adjusts to the new normal. If your symptoms persist, however, see a doctor. It may be something different or serious. ...Read more

What to do if I eat a high fibre diet with lots of water but im still constipated. What causes this?

How often do you go.: The true 'definition' of constipation is once week. Are your stools 'normal' or hard. Some people do not have to 'go' every day. I would like my patients to have a bm at least every 4 days. You also need to really record daily how much fiber and water you consume in a day. Then discuss that with your physician. Adults should strive for at least 30 gram of fiber daily and 64 ounces of water. ...Read more

Had c-oscopy ok. Drinking lots of water and fiber. Still constipated. Could asbestos expose cause this. If not why am I constipated?

You can actually: Take too much fiber and cause constipation. I don't use fiber supplements but tell patients to eat a healthy fiber diet. Also caffeine and alcohol dehydrate and contribute to constipation so keep the 80-100 ounces of fluids as caffeine free/alcohol free. Drink more if you exercise or travel by plane often. ...Read more

I am constipated rather frequently even if I eat plenty of fiber and always drink water. I take senna when I need to, but what could be the cause?

A sluggish colon: A common problem is a very sluggish (moving material through) and efficient (removing water from the stool) colon. A problem when you have bloating and discomfort as a result - but not a problem with absorption of "toxins". You need to help your colon to be more active. Senna is bad - you develop a tolerance and become addicted to it. Stool softeners, mom, glycolax are ok, even daily. ...Read more
