GERD??: Shortness of breath and weight loss can be caused by many things. Since it is not improving on anti-reflux med for 2 months, you need further evaluation. A lung doctor may be helpful to figure out what the shortness of breath is from. Are your oxygen levels low? Pulmonary function testing, a CAT scan of the chest, blood work, etc. May be needed. If you smoke, quit ASAP. See lung doctor. Good luck!

Losing Weight (Definition)

Many people resolve to lose weight in the New Year for different reasons. For those who are overweight or obese, there are many health benefits to losing weight. I have gerd, trouble swallowing and unintentional weight loss I have been wondering what can you eat to gain weight when you have gerd?

See your doctor: Both trouble swallowing and unintentional weight loss are serious symptoms and may be due to problems other than gerd. Do not wait to see a gastroenterologist.

Recent severe aching in hands/feet plus GERD symptoms disappeared after drastically restricting eating. Worried about fast weight loss. Suggestions?

Recent severe aching in hands/feet plus GERD symptoms disappeared after drastically restricting eating. Worried about fast weight loss. Suggestions?

Gluten Sensitivity: Wheat gluten sensitivity can cause severe gastrointestinal and pain symptoms including reflux, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, joint and muscle pain, fasciitis in hands and feet, and fibromyalgia type pain. If you stopped eating wheat and those symptoms disappeared, it is likely you are sensitive. That does not mean you have celiac disease, but you may want the blood test. Good luck!

22 Female w/unintentional weight loss the last few months, loss of appetite, GFR of 84, GERD for 3 years, and irregular bowel movements. Ideas? Thanks

Challenging in 400: Characters! My first question, why do you know your GFR? Estimated GFR from serum creatinine? It is actually not too uncommon for people to have reflux and irritable bowel at the same time. Both dysfunctions of the GI system. Would be uncommon for symptoms of GERD to be so severe as to cause anorexia and weight loss. Then, why low GFR? This can only be sorted out by detailed eval in person by Doc!

Lump in throat, unintentional weight loss, heartburn is it GERD or cancer?

Lump in throat, unintentional weight loss, heartburn is it GERD or cancer?

Consider endoscopy: Upper GI endoscopy is usually ordered with these symptoms to determine exactly what is going on. At your age reflux may be the cause, however, with the lump in the throat symptoms, I would also consider eosinophilic esophagitis as a possibility. Endoscopy with biopsy will allow them to put your mind at ease to rule out cancer, look for reflux changes, and check for precancerous barrett's change.

Recently heartburn coming back, unintentional weight loss for months and recently having difficulty swallowing and have lump in my throat is it gerd?

Recently heartburn coming back, unintentional weight loss for months and recently having difficulty swallowing and have lump in my throat is it gerd?

Need evaluation: Because of your age, your symptoms also could be related to thyroid problems, or thyroglossal cyst. For which rushing into a diagnosis of gerd without physical exam wouldn't be recommended, especially if you have been losing weight.

My doctor recently suspected that I have gerd...I've been having problems with weight [i am 110 lbs but losing weight. Could this be symptoms of gerd.?

My doctor recently suspected that I have gerd...I've been having problems with weight [i am 110 lbs but losing weight. Could this be symptoms of gerd.?

Not clear: Weight loss is not a common finding in gerd. Symptoms are usually heartburn, food or bile refluxing into throat, sometimes food sticking in the esophagus. Not sure if I am missing information or medical history.

Can heartburn and stomach acid problems cause a loss of appetite and 30lbs of unintentional weight loss in 4 months?

Can heartburn and stomach acid problems cause a loss of appetite and 30lbs of unintentional weight loss in 4 months?

Abnormal: There is something else going on if you have lost 30 pounds without meaning to in 4 months. Heartburn to the point of preventing you from eating is serious enough to warrant close evaluation by a gastroenterologist.

Does GERD or stomach inflammation cause weight loss?

Does GERD or stomach inflammation cause weight loss?

It can: It can but I would not assume that. If you have stomach pain and weight loss you should be checked by a GI doctor.

Dad (63) has HTN on OAT. Experiencing stomach burn, heartburn, very poor appetite & weight loss. Smoker & regular drinker. Not fond of doctor's visits?

What is OAT?: I cannot find this acronym in association with treatments for hypertension, so I cannot answer your question. It sounds like you are more concerned with your dad's health than he is, and that will make it unlikely that you can help. Without a medical evaluation of his symptoms, which are very likely related to, if not caused by, excessive drinking and smoking, hard to say. Cut down or stop both!!

Causes of the "loss of taste" and if caused by gerd; what foods can benefit to get the taste buds again activated?

Causes of the "loss of taste" and if caused by gerd; what foods can benefit to get the taste buds again activated?

Many: Loss of taste is a common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd), salivary gland infection, sinusitis, poor dental hygiene, or even certain medicines. Prepare foods with a variety of colors and textures. Use aromatic herbs and hot spices to add more flavor; however, avoid adding more sugar or salt to foods. If your diet permits, add small amounts of cheese, olive oil, butter toasted nuts.

Fatigue, heartburn, don't have appetite, loss weight. What's the possible reason for all of this? Diagnosed with GERD 2 years ago.

See doctor: What you described warrants a more detailed history, physical examination and may be some tests. Unintended weight loss in an adult is a cause for concern. Please see your doctor for an in-person evaluation. Wish you good health.

Sunken eyes with dark circles highly visible after I developed gerd, bloating and stomach pain, no weight loss but acne on forehead, please advice thanks!

YOU NEED A CHECK UP: With the symptoms you mentioned you need to get checked by your doctor to find the cause of all your symptoms gerd can be treated with acid suppression therapy, acne with benzyl peroxide, local antibiotics and retinoids. But sunken eyes and dark circles etc, need to be investigated. You may need GI consult and/or endoscopy get a good check up.
