Can Gas Cause Upper Back Pain
Thoracic (Upper Back) Strain (Definition)
Discomfort or pain in the back at the level of the rib cage to the neck. Although upper back pain is not as common as lower back pain, the causes are often the same and include muscle strain or irritation (most common), injury to the spine leading to slipped disc or degeneration, or the pinching of a nerve in the back. ...Read more
May be gas in large: This may be what we call the "splenic flexure syndrome" where we get gas in the large intestine where the intestine flexes from the tranversecolon to the left descending colon - across the top of the abdomen and down to the left side. The intestine turns under where the spleen is and that is why it is called the splenic flexure where the intestine turns. Intestine gas can build up = pain.
I have gerd, when I have a lot of gas I get upper back pain, goes away after burping, happens when I eat big meals usually?
Simethicone: Simethicone dissolves the gas and that will help you. Obviously, eat smaller meals. Check and make sure you are not gulping down air when nervous or talking too fast (aerophagy). Consider taking a proton pump inhibitor to fix your gerd. May want to discuss your options with a GI specialist, may want to check for barrett's esophagus at some point also.

A few things: Serious problems such as pleurisy are possible. In my practice, most such pain is due to a malfunctioning rib. Ribs should 'go up' in front and 'down' in back with inhalation and do the opposite during exhalation. When one or more ribs 'get stuck, ' pain-from ache to severe sharp in front &/or back can occur. A good history & osteopathic hands-on exam could determine cause. Manipulation may fix it.
