Can Folic Acid Cause Constipation
Folic acid, AKA folate (folic acid) (vit B9), is recommended for all women wanting to get pregnant -- 0.4mg (400mcg) daily, which is important for preventing birth defects like spina bifida. Women w/ a hx these disorders should take 10x that amt daily -- 4mg (4000mcg) through the 3rd month of pregnancy. It won't affect fertility, chances of conception/twins, or periods. ...Read more

My 8 year old has achey joints, headaches, emotional swings, feeling cold and on and off constipation. Her ferritin is 27 ug/l, saturation 44%, haemoglobin 128 g/l and red cell folate (folic acid) is 1918 nmol/l?
Folic acid: This is not likely to produce fatigue. See a doctor and have this professionally evaluated. ...Read more
Iam 36yrs f. what cause and what does it mean high folic acid level (24.00 ng/ml) and normal Vit B12 (475pg/ml)?
Not a problem:
There are no ill-effects associated with a high serum folate.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

Homocysteine 10.9 normal is lower than 10.4. B12 folic acid came back normal. So what else can cause it to be high?
Stop worrying: Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside. I wouldn't give that stuff another thought. A decade ago, this was being tooted as a new coronary risk factor but most of the pathologists I know disregard it. Your B12 and folate (folic acid) are fine. There's nothing you're going to do about this. It probably means nothing. * say, "Forget it." But ask your own physician. ...Read more
Are elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) levels bad? Cause of this? How to bring them down to normal levels?
High B12 & folate (folic acid) is not dangerous per se (these vits. Have no known toxicity)& may not be serious, but high B12 may paradoxically be a sign of B12 deficiency & may also be caused by acute or chronic liver disease or leukemia, so deserves further evaluation-see http://healthyeating. I read somwhere taking more then 15mg folic acid causes problems with absorb zinc. So can I take them separate. I.E 15mg B9 morning & zinc in evening.
May not be an issue: Good question. Some studies have shown that in those who had low zinc levels taking Folic Acid reduced zinc absorption ; utilization. Others have shown taking Folic Acid improves zinc absorption ; still others show no significant interaction! It does not seem to be an issue for most. You can try separating them but it may not be necessary. See http://lpi. Oregonstate. Edu/infocenter/minerals/zinc/. ...Read more

I took an extra daily dose of folic acid yesterday and today I developed heartburn, can that cause heartburn?
Could depend on dose: I've had patients tell me that Folic Acid sometimes causes some gastrointestinal distress and heartburn, and it is a listed side effect. Higher doses seem to do it more. That being said, most people taking extra Folic Acid are also pregnant - which is prime time for developing heartburn symptoms, independent of Folic Acid use. ...Read more
Are low folate (folic acid) levels alone dangerous? They have been low for a year. Can it cause any damage to health?
Low folate (folic acid) bad:
There's no reason to walk around with low folate (folic acid) levels. It's cheap and safe to supplement it. So don't sit around wondering if it hurt you in the past. Just take a supplement.

Folate (folic acid): No, it can not.Get a more detailed answer ›
Inadequate diet: This is caused by not eating enough foods rich in folate: dark leafy greens (spinach), beans & lentils, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. You can also obtain folate from supplements, though most supps have folic acid, a synthetic form you need to convert to folate. 1/3 of people can't make that conversion & thus should take l-5-mthf. Folate (folic acid) anemia: Folate (folic acid) and B12 are closely related in their functions. If one replaces folate (folic acid) alone in a megaloblastic anemia but not B12 also, it can lead to neurological damage -- difficulty walking, along with delusional psychosis. I found a case of this, where the patient developed capgras syndrome: the delusion that a relative had been replaced by an impostor. Www. Ncbi. Nlm. Nih. Gov/pubmed/15029091. ...Read more
It shouldn't: Folate (folic acid) deficiency is associated with anemia (low hemoglobin, which is a protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen.) it is not a cause of amenorrhea. Far and away the most common cause of absent periods is pregnancy, but it can be cause by lots of other things, including hormonal imbalance. ...Read more
