Can excessive diphenhydramine actually make you itchy?

Can excessive diphenhydramine actually make you itchy?

Yes: I have had several patients who had become allergic to Diphenhydramine after using it on the skin for poison ivy or other ailments, so yes, although rare, any previous use of Diphenhydramine can cause an allergic reaction to it, such as itching at first, then rash. This is a concern and must be documented because it is one of our go-to medicines for allergies. ...Read more

Please tell me can diphenhydramine make you feel itchy all over?

Unlikely but: Anything is possible. If you are already itching all over and try to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to control the itching, then the intense itching may just be progressing whether you take the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or not. Try other antihistamine to see if they cause or relieve your itching. It has been suggested that the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) when applied topically may lead to allergic sensitization to the drug. ...Read more

I've suddenly become itchy and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is not working. What do you recommend?

Might need steroids: But that would require a prescription. Try an moisturizer or topical steroid, over the counter, especially if the itch is in one spot (not near eyes, though). Dermatitis: Maybe it is hives, which is why the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) helped. Benadryl (diphenhydramine): I know it's hard to watch your baby go through this.

Can I inject Benadryl (diphenhydramine) into bug bites? I mean, when they get really itchy, sometimes putting it on the skin doesn't help enough.

No, not for problem: Injection of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is used only for general reactions, not for local reactions such as insect bites. If you develop an anaphylaxis to wasp, honey-bees, or fire-ants, with history of previous systemic reactions affecting the whole body, then it will be indicated. Insect repellents are the best way to go. For local reactions, cortisone creams have helped many patients. ...Read more

Could be several: Things. Allergic reaction, like a bite or even a food or medication could cause this. More serious concern would be infection of tissue in area, called cellulitis, or thrombophlebitis (inflammation in blood vessels). Could try a cool compress for swelling and itching, but if worsens, I'd recommend seeing a doc. ...Read more
