Can depression and anxiety delay period?

Can depression and anxiety delay period?

Yes, they can: Any stress can change the timing of a period to earlier or later. If it is delayed, however, it would be wise to get a pregnancy test done.

Is it normal for a person with depression to be extra suicidal on their period?

Is it normal for a person with depression to be extra suicidal on their period?

Not normal: Being suicidal is never "normal, " but it happens. In general, depressive symptoms can be worse in premenstrual dysphoric disorder just before a menstrual period -- usually lessening as bleeding begins. If you're suicidal now, please tell your parents (your question says you're 15), or a teacher or counselor! Or you can go to an er or to your doctor. Do not wait! Help is available for you.

Please can I ask, if depression, pstd is left untreated for a long period and the person has shut down, is it possible that this is a permanent thing?

Please can I ask, if depression, pstd is left untreated for a long period and the person has shut down, is it possible that this is a permanent thing?

PTSD is treatable: But the person may be too frightened or depressed to seek it out. It does not have to be permanent and prognosis is better today than years ago. It is important to go to a professional or inpatient clinic that specializes in ptsd. Group therapy and sometimes clinical hypnosis, and possibly medication can be used in treatment. Maybe you or a friend can go w/him, at least at first.

If you have had depression, is there a period of time after where it's most likely to come back?

If you have had depression, is there a period of time after where it's most likely to come back?

It depends: It depends some on your social supports, lifestyle, and family history -- but people most frequently relapse when they stop treatment too soon. Some may "feel fine" after a few months' medication and/or psychotherapy, and want to end treatment. However, studies show that people who continue treatment for at least 8-12 months will do the best. If appropriate, a gradual taper may be possible.

Need evaluation: From your description your mood is unstable ("extreme depression" to "super hyper.") bipolar disorder may present in this way, but recreational drugs can also cause similar symptoms. Please see your physician for an evaluation of these issues. That will provide a much better answer about "why" you're experiencing this. Best wishes.

PremenstrualSyndrome: Depression that comes on approximately 4 days before menstruation and goes away 2-3 days after onset of menstruation is part of the premenstrual syndrome and is hormone related. The most effective treatments are SSRI type anti-depressants, and are usually prescribed to be taken throughout the month. They can often be effective starting day 14 of cycle and stopping with menstruation.

When I am on my period my depression/anxiety is 10x worse. I will think of dark thoughts and of death. After my flow it's not as intence? Why?

Fluctuating hormones: During a woman's monthly cycle hormonal fluctuations which signal or trigger the menstrual period can also make women angry, irritable, generally not very amorous, and in some cases can exacerbate or bring on bouts of feeling low and depression. If you have thoughts about death my impression is that's a bit extreme so I think you should talk to your doctor about that in particular.

Sounds like you: Could benefit from an evaluation to determine if you have, in addition to depression, an anxiety disorder. Therapy & medication (e.g., ssri's) could greatly help with your depression & panic. Also important not to rely on your pain medication to help you cope. Sounds like you may let your fears get out of control, which is certainly no fun. I hope you seek additional help. Good luck!

How do I know for sure if I have depression or if I just have really bad hormones from my period?

Should not be always: You are describing premenstrual syndrome, a severe change in mood that occurs before your period. Other psychiatric syndromes are associated with symptoms unrelated to menstruation. Both types of disorders are treatable. See a psychiatrist for an evaluation.

My mom is 50 years old and she was telling me her last period was 20 days long and she has depression is she going through menapause?

Peri-Menopause: At her age, it is likely she might be going through peri-menopause, a period, average 4 years, before menopause. Typical and common symptoms include irregular cycles, less time between cycles or skipped cycles, depression, hot flashes, trouble with sleep, mood swings/irritability. Hormonal imbalances/thyroid problems also need to be ruled out. She should see her doctor for an evaluation.

I initially had depression for years, it went untreated for a prolonged period of time, could this have escalated to my current condition, bipolar 2?

No.: Diagnosing bipolar disorder can be controversial among psychiatrists. One view is that you had bipolar II all along, but it was not clear, and it merely looked like you had unipolar depression. Either someone took a closer look, or you developed hypomanic episodes, which clarified.
