Can cold weather make my fingers swell?

Can cold weather make my fingers swell?

Yes: Not all swelling (angioedema) is due to allergy. While there are many causes of swelling, one is a type of swelling disorder called cold urticaria, which can result in hives or swelling due to cold exposure.

Swelling (Definition)

Swelling is the enlargement of organs, skin, or other body parts. It is caused by a buildup of fluid in the tissues. The extra fluid can lead to a rapid increase in weight over a short period of time (days to weeks). Swelling can occur all over the body (generalized) or only in one part ...Read more

Why does my fingers swell and feel itchy during cold weather?

Why does my fingers swell and feel itchy during cold weather?

AD: Check with a dermatologist to see if you have a variant of atopic dermatitis. Cold weather can make dry skin worse which is a trigger for dermatitis.

Is that a question?: What you describe is not raynauds. In that disease, the fingers loose blood supply due to spasm or the arteries & the fingers turn white & are painful. They need slow low temperature warming. Arm pits is a good choice. Any hot exposure will cause severe pain, & you can cause burns as there is no blood supply 2 protect the skin from injury.

My fingers swell up in hot weather, is this something to be concerned about?

My fingers swell up in hot weather, is this something to be concerned about?

Not usually: Increased temperature alone can explain swelling. The blood vessels in the skin dilate so that we can radiate away the heat from out core. Smoking can also be the sign of a disease, allergy or reaction to medication/ Additional history and examination can help. Be certain to ask your doctor.

Please help: I've been getting these terrible sharp pains throughout my pinky finger (only my pinky). Cold weather seems to spark the pain.

Please help: I've been getting these terrible sharp pains throughout my pinky finger (only my pinky). Cold weather seems to spark the pain.

Nerovasc Issue: The small finger sensation comes from the ulnar nerve. Irritation can cause a numb sensation. A sharp pain that is related to the cold can be raynauds although not usually painful. A tendonitis can produce sharp pains but usually not associated with temp changes. A good exam would provide insight.

My fingers turn white in the cold weather and then go purple and then normal colour. Can be quite painful please help?

Raynaud's: Is a disorder where small blood vessels in the fingers constrict in response to cold and pain ensues. There may be a reason behind this such as an inflammatory or endocrine disorder or it vans occur by itself. Speak to your pcp about this. There are medications that may help ranging from niacin a vitamin to blood pressure calcium blocker I nitrous acting meds. Such as viagra (sildenafil) or nitro

Could it be healthy to have cold/numb fingers while running in cold weather?

Could it be healthy to have cold/numb fingers while running in cold weather?

Usually not serious: You describe symptoms suggestive of raynaud's phenomenon. Blood vessels of fingers react excessively to cold and blood supply to fingers diminishes. Protect you fingers from cold and quickly warm your fingers.

This winter my pointer finger below the knuckle would turn white, cold, and numb when out in cold weather, what would cause this? Is it serious?

Information: This may be a variant of raynaud's phenomenon. It is an over reaction of the sympathetic and nervous system to the cold causing vascular spasm in the finger. Yes it can be serious and shoud be evaluated.

Vasospasm: Your blood vessels are sensitive to cold. Cold weather causes compression of blood vessels away from the body like finger tips and toes cause purple blue discoloration. This can be improved by wearing gloves and wool socks to keep hands and feet warm.

Vascular problem: Ask your doctor if you have a vascular or a rheumatologic disorder such as Raynauds syndrome. Calcium channel blockers can be used to help the symptoms of Raynauds.

My hand (mostly fingers) tend to itch in cold weather, is it bad circulation? Why when I use the computer 1 of my hand gets way colder than other?

My hand (mostly fingers) tend to itch in cold weather, is it bad circulation? Why when I use the computer 1 of my hand gets way colder than other?

Hand circulation: This sounds like it could be a combination of positional/nerve irritation/ kind of issue and possible a hyper spasticity issue. A vascular surgeon can do the circulatory evaluation for you. Ask you doctor for a referral.

RAYNAUDS?: Hi Jeremy654 This is not Raynauds by description. Wear gloves first and avoid cold contact and if it continues to be a problem see a doc but this is most likely benign "erythrocyanosis". thanks
