See a derm: what your describing does fit into the D of the ABCDE's of melanoma. However you should show this to your friendly dermatologist. If there is enough suspicion about the lesion have a biopsy performed to give you the definitive answer. ...Read more

Here is a link to the CDC website on skin cancer.
If a lesion is suspicious, a dermatologist can take a biopsy so a pathologist can look at the cells under the microscope for definitive answer. Good luck ...Read more

Had mole removed, 3mm, all brown, had irregular borders. I think it's been there long time & I don't think it's changed. Can't sleep, chance Melanoma?

Biopsied?: Did the doctor who removed it sent the specimen for pathological analysis(biopsy). Though it had irregular border, if it was not increasing in size fastly, no pain, no itching,no easy bleeding tendency, no change in color, no change in pigmentation , no change in thickness then no need to worry. Follow with your dr. who removed it once in every 2-3 years , for the next 5-10 years for reassurance ...Read more

Ugly duckling: No hard and fast rules about when to watch and when to cut. One way to decide is the ugly duckling principle. If one mole looks a lot different then the rest remove it. If a lot of abnormal moles take the worst, the one that is changing, or new. For sure remove if =/>7mm irreg shape > 2 colors fuzzy borders. There is also the willy factor. If it gives me the "willies" get it out. Good health ...Read more

Get a Derm Consult: Melanoma typically is pigmented and has a dark color. It can regress due to your body's immune response to it. However, you should not take a chance trying to diagnosis this yourself. Melanoma is a deadly disease and early detection can lead to a cure. Delayed detection can be fatal. ...Read more

Round mole on the bottom of a toe. It showed about 8 yrs ago and has not changed. It is very tiny/brown. Should I be concerned it could be melanoma?

Not melanoma now.: While all moles should be monitored in the long term for any changes in color, shape, thickness and size, a melanoma would not stay on your skin unchanged for eight years. They're simply more aggressive than that. But continue to monitor this and any other moles you may have. An annual "skin survey" by a Dermatologist would be a good idea. ...Read more

New, normal looking mole light brown, seems to be getting slightly bigger, very lil. Derm appt next month, okay to wait? Anxiety about melanoma. Age32

You did right: Watch for changes in it and if none, don't worry - the month will go faster if you relax. But if you see any change, call to get in if possible. Still, don't worry - just let the office know and perhaps send a before/after photo. You should be ok if this is really new and exam in a month. Best! Take a photo now. ...Read more

I have a small mole on my right arm. It's always been slightly raised. Seems different now though. Looks half white, half brown. Melanoma?

Get it checked it: It is unlikely to be melanoma, however, it is not feasible to know without examining the lesion. If a mole changes color, it should be looked at by a doctor to ascertain if the lesion should be removed and the tissue examined by a pathologist. ...Read more

I've had 6 dermatologists look at a raise 3mm medium brown mole that hasn't changed in two years. All said it's fine. Could it be nodular melanoma?

Melanomas change: Usually within two years a melanoma would change. The likelihood that a melanoma will not change in 2 years is almost non-existent. Watch the mole for the following: asymmetry, border irregularity, color irregularity, and change. If it changes or develops any of these characteristics, have it removed. Also if a mole is significantly different than all your other moles (ugly duckling sign). ...Read more

I have 3 small brown moles together on forearm, not sore to touch but gettinga random pain now and again in forearm.Could it be melanoma?

Consider biopsy: Melanoma can have certain risk factors on visual inspection (color, asymmetry, size, character of pigmentation, etc) but the only way to know for sure is to take a tissue sample called a biopsy. This will be examined under the microscope to tell whether or not you have melanoma. What you describe would seem rather low probability of melanoma though. ...Read more

Concerning findings: Overnight changes in moles are very rare. You are describing several changes suggestive of a melanoma...Irregular borders, asymmetric nature, multiple colors...

Get that mole evaluated asap. If there is any doubt an office biopsy will shed light on what is going on. Don't delay, melanoma can be a life threatening problem, but can be cured if caught early! ...Read more
