I had not heard of "kahler's disease" until seeing multiple questions on healthtap. It is multiple myeloma (mm). "multiple" is from the often seen "multiple" bone lesions (especially in advanced disease). Mm is a cancer of plasma cells [highly specialized b white blood cells (lymphocytes)] that produce antibodies. Sx are crab: hypercalcemia, renal insufficency, anemia, ...Read more
Nobody knows: Bottom line is that nobody knows for sure. No serious studies have correlated multiple myeloma and stress, so this would be an unlikely cause. Genetic abnormalities ate involved in causing this disease but is hard to figure out what is exactly causing such genetic abnormalities. Best wishes, ariel. ...Read more
It is possible: Some forms of myeloma secrete a protein called a light chain that can invade organs like the heard or liver and cause it to function poorly. Most of the problems with the heart arise from many of the early treatments of myeloma which included a drug called adriomycin. Modern chemotherapy can still cause heart problems but not at the same rate. ...Read more
No simple answer: Multiple myeloma has been associated with ionizing radiation (atomic bomb level), herbicides, petroleum products, analin hair dyes, autoimmune disease but there is no clear cut association. Why sickle cell anemeia / multiple myeloma cause diabetes insipidus? Is it because it may obstruct the blood flow to the kidneys and damage them?
Basically right: Even sickle cell trait ruins much of the concentrating ability of the kidneys by adulthood. Myeloma is more likely to damage and obstruct the tubules themselves. Both produce a kidney lesion that prevents the urine from becoming concentrated, rather than a pituitary diabetes insipidus. ...Read more
Pl suggest any alternative remedy/ies for multiple myeloma I am 48 yer old and no m band seen at this moment after 6 months of chemo?
Homeopathy, herbs ;: There are no proven alternatives for multiple myeloma but that does not mean they may not help; but I would continue standard treatments too. A healthy diet, tonifying herbs, reducing body burden of heavy metals ; other environmental toxins, stress reduction ; working to clear unresolved anger/grief etc. Can only help. I also advise classical homeopathy with a good homeopath. See comments for more:. ...Read more
Multiple Myeloma: While there is no defined "cure" for multiple myeloma, chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplants have been shown to cause remission in many cases. With regard to cost, chemotherapy is expensive if paying cash and autologous stem cell transplant may cost over 100K, so it is important to check with insurance providers regarding this. ...Read more

Much better now: With all the new targeted drugs for myeloma and several to come, patients live many more years. Some have said this cancer is now more like a chronic disease - still dangerous and needing treatment but it is characterized by longer periods of remission after treatment. Therefore a 65 or 75 year old person may have a normal life span with this disease now. ...Read more
It depends: Survival in myeloma depends on a number of factors. First, is stage. Second is chromosomal abnormalities. Some have a good prognosis, others not so good. In general we think that myeloma is not usually curable with standard therapies, but survival is getting better with our newer agents, so that living 10 years is not unusual. Cure may be possible with allogeneic bone marrow transplant. ...Read more
Depends on heart: The light chain deposition disease is unlikely to affect survival. In fact a review of myeloma and kidney failure published last year demonstrated no change in outcome in myeloma patients with or without kidney failure. The biggest predictor of outcome is response to chemotherapy. Velcade (bortezomib) (new chemo) has been a game changer. In addition, patients with cardiac involvement do very poorly. ...Read more
Part of the disease: Whenever you have smoldering myeloma of certain type, say IgG for example, the other antibody types like IgM and IgA are often decreased.
