No: The estrogen in birth control pills increase the levels of thyroid hormone binding proteins in the blood. This requires your thyroid to make more hormone to fill up the binding sites. If the thyroid is not working well, it will result in lower blood levels of thyroid hormone and a rise in tsh, the test used to determine hypothyroidism. A rise in TSH with birth control pills means hypothyroidism. ...Read more
Dx hypothyroid in April, been on synthroid (thyroxine) 0.025mg x 3 months, but TSH went higher (~13) w/ normal ft4. Could viorele birth control cause high TSH?
What's the next dose: Don't think so. More likely it is because 0.025mg is the smallest Synthroid (thyroxine) pill. Synthroid (thyroxine) comes in about 12 sizes, from 0.025mg to 0.300mg. If one's doctor started her on 0.025mg and there is no drop in the TSH, one can ask at her follow-up visit (there is always a lot of follow-up until the proper dose is found and the TSH is normal) what the next dose is. ...Read more

Will birth control pills damage my thyroid even more than it is? I already have hypothyroidism and taking levothyroxine.
Birth Control: Doesn't damage your thyroid. The estrogen in the birth control pill will stimulate an increase in the amount of thyroid binding globulin (TBG) your body makes, so you may require a slightly higher dose of levothyroxine to compensate for the increased tbg. A similar phenomenon occurs during pregnancy. ...Read more

My opinion is that a woman should have a period at least once every 3 months. The reason being is to prevent a build up of the uterine lining which over time could predispose a woman to uterine cancer. You can take three packs straight obviously skipping the placebo and only taking the active pills, after the third pack take the placebo and you should get your period that week, then you can repeat another 3 cycles etc., or you can try seasonique which is formulated to have your period every 3 months.
Take care. ...Read more
If a hypothyroid woman is on birth control pills alone (no levothyroxine), would it improve some of her symptoms like acne or hair loss?
Odd question: If she has low thyroid she will clearly benefit from thyroid therapy. Why not??? The specific type of birth control is significant. Some hormones reduce acne and improve hair problems. Some hormones (androgenic progesterones) aggravate acne and cause loss of scalp hair. All 3 of your meds reduce acne and reduce loss of scalp hair. For polycystic ovary, weight loss and perhaps metformin are useful. ...Read more
I'm hypothyroid. When on birth control alone, I noticed dat my acne &hair loss improved little. Is dis pos? Iv heard dat bcps worsen thyroid problems?
BCP and thyroid: BCP do not worsen thyroid problems. Presumably you are taking levothyroxine for your hypothyroidism. BCP increases the amount of thyroid binding protein in the blood. In some of the older blood tests, this altered some of the values, but if a TSH or FT4 is measured, there is no problem with interpretation of lab values. ...Read more
