Difficult situation: COPD at advanced age is difficult. You are probably looking at longterm oxygen which has been showing to decrease mortality in the disease. Make sure your mother's medications are maximized. Also consider physical therapy or pulmonary rehab to help her physically deal with her illness.

Go to ER: You may need to use rescue inhalers as albuterol but if the symptom worsen go to er fast. The faster the symptom worsen the fastest you have to go to the er.

My doctor prescribed me three meds prednisone 25mg/day, symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) 400microgram/day, salbutamol 2puffs if I need. Does that means I have severe asthma?

My doctor prescribed me three meds prednisone 25mg/day, symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) 400microgram/day, salbutamol 2puffs if I need. Does that means I have severe asthma?

Mgt/workup: The severity of your asthma upon presentation and prior to the use of any steroid preparation is distinct from the control of your asthma. Multiple medications may be needed to control your asthma. Determine the triggers, avoid smoke and obtain allergy/pulmonary function tests as part of your management and workup. Use good inhaler technique, a spacer device to deliver the inhaled meds

Is it okay to take antihistamines together with combination expectorant medications like (salbutamol?

Is it okay to take antihistamines together with combination expectorant medications like (salbutamol?

Yes: This combo is safe. Respiratory problems are sneaky and can turn nasty quickly. Worsening breathing with increasing wheezing has to be treated quickly by your pcp or if any delay you must go to emergency room immediately. Wheezing means airways are in spasm and can get worse fast! Never delay being treated!

Will an overdose of salbutamol lead to death?

Not necessarily: Salbutamol, though used as bronchodilator, could be abused and used as doping agent to possibly enhance athletic performance. Side effects are many but the most worrisome include myocardial ischemia though rare, hypotension, and hypokalemia-low potassium. Though all three are not fatal, in patients with underlying renal heart of irregular beats, could possibly be really dangerous. Take care!
