Effient 10 mg & 162 mg asprin has lowered my dad's platelet count to 38k after 3 mon. Of angioplasty (1stent-lad). Should his doctor stop effient?
Probably: Low platelet count due to Effient is not common but bleeding risk is increased with platelet count at that level + efffient and aspirin. Usually drugs like Effient or Plavix (clopidogrel) are recommednded for one year for patients with drug eluting stents to help prevent clotting of the stent. Plavix (clopidogrel) may be less likely to cause low platelets. Talk to the doctor to understand the risk/benefit of the treatment. ...Read more

I'm a 34-year old with essential thrombocythemia. Since I am still low risk for blood clots, what are natural ways to lower my platelet count?
There are none: Essential thrombocythemia is a real disease and one for which the best treatment is to do nothing. Any "nature doctor" who offers you a non-evidence-based nostrum is doing less for you than someone who simply urges you not to treat a lab value. By the way, in the young, the thrombocytosis if iron deficiency can be mistaken for ET. Do you have a JAK2 mutation? Your physician is your best guide. ...Read more
