My daughter tested positive for mono yesterday. How long has it been since she contracted the virus. She doesn't seem to b overly tired but had the sore throat and swollen glands.

Mono testing: Given that she has other symptoms, it is likely that the disease contact was within the past week to 10 days. The mono test is based on development of IgM antibodies, which are the first ones to appear, and develop within about a week. Depending on the test, there can be other considerations, but her case sounds consistent with the common scenario. ...Read more

Something infectious: Mono is from the EBV virus, and can cause swollen glands (lymph nodes) and big tonsils. Strep throat can do the same thing, but Strep throat needs antibiotics. Some other infections can cause big lymph nodes. More rarely, blood disorders and blood cancers cause swollen lymph nodes and fatigue (person often gets anemic). I had oral sex then a week later swollen glands and a sore throat came, I'm 19 yr female what could this be?

Maybe strep, flu, etc.: One should be sure to tell the doctor exactly what kind of oral sex is going on. Sore throat symptoms can be from cold viruses, strep throat, allergies, etc... It can be difficult to tell what the cause is. If symptoms only last 1-2 days, it is more likely allergies or irritation. Swollen glands: I agree with as dr. Thompson, swollen glands with a sore throat and congestion are common. Generally this is all caused by a virus and is best treated by doing things to ease your symptoms and amake you feel better. If the glands are extremely tender or are in a location other than just below your jaw or the front of your neck, you probably want to make sure you don't have strep. ...Read more

Most likely benign.: First, I have to know what is swollen: glands (such as salivary) or lymph nodes. Then, how often are they swollen, and for how long each time? Are they always in the same place, and are they painful if you touch them? She has no sore throat or earache, but does she have fever? Chills? Unusual sweating? Has she lost weight?
