Can acid reflux cause shortness of breath and hoarseness or is it something else?

It can: Acid reflux may cause hoarseness and persistent cough-sob. Or it can be something else too. You should rule out cardiac causes of these symptoms.

Acid Reflux (Definition)

Technically called GERD, acid reflux is the presence of acidic stomach contents in the esophagus. The acid irritates the esophagus causing heartburn symptoms. The regurgitation or reflux can vary greatly as can the symptoms. Blocking stomach acid with medications can alleviate the burning but medication cannot stop the reflux. Can acid reflux/gerd cause shortness of breath?

Can acid reflux/gerd cause shortness of breath?

GERD: In some patients with Gerd, microaspiration occurs, which could result in shortness of breath either from direct aspiration into the trachea or from reflux-induced asthma. Just another reason to get Gerd under control. Good luck.

For a few months, I have been experiencing shortness of breath, more when I am sitting or lying down (improved by exercise) and frequent forced burping with occasional acid reflux. Could all of this be caused by reflux or is it more serious?

Without ↑information: & detective work, impossible to say at a distance. Yet your theory (you're the only one who can perceive your symptoms) does make sense & you demonstrate an understanding of basics of differential diagnosis methodology. Like everyone, you are your own primary medical decision maker (physician if you will), regardless how competent, or not. Be ware, reflux, long term, does drive esophageal cancer.

Is GERD can also cause dizziness and light sensitivity and shortness of breath? I am suffering from acid reflux.

GERD: A burning sensation in your chest or chest pain, dysphagia and dry cough, but not dizziness and shortness of breath. See your health care provider for complete examination and tests. Good luck.

Can indigestion/acid reflux cause chest tightness & feeling like I cant take a deep breath/shortness of breath?

Can indigestion/acid reflux cause chest tightness & feeling like I cant take a deep breath/shortness of breath?

Unlikely: It's possible, but much less likely than other causes. In general, the chest pain you describe in your age group is more likely to be musculoskeletal (strain or inflammation) or respiratory (viral pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma). However, it could be cardiac or even GI related. You should contact your doctor immediately or go to the closest urgent care/ER if you're having breathing problems.

Last night I ate fruits and the shortness of breath was gone. But this morning I woke up and the shortness of breath returns. Because of acid reflux?

It could be reflux: Your right, it could be reflux; however, other conditions that could cause shortness of breath, especially after lying flat, include congestive heart failure, kidney failure, and special types of lung problems. See your physician for a full evaluation.

Frequent dizzy spells throughout the day. Shortness of breath especially when eating/drinking/lying down. Diagnosed with acid reflux in May. Related?

Dizzy spells: " dizzy spells" can a very widely by description, acid reflux unless associated with hyperventilation is an unlikely cause, you need further assessment and diagnostic effort.

Need more info: Your physical characteristics may play a role. Some questions you need to consider are the situations when this occurs. Is this whenever you are moving, or intermittent? Is it at certain times, like right after a full moon? It sounds like you have seen a doctor since you had a cardiac work up and know you have reflux. You could be anemic, but unlikely for a werewolf. More history please.

Can the symptoms of acid reflux be similar to copd ie shortness of breath chest discomfort burping?

Acid reflux: Symptoms can include shortness of breath, chest discomfort, and burping. These symptoms are more similar to those experienced due to heart disease (angina, heart attack) than to symptoms of COPD. There may be some overlap with symptoms from all three conditions. If a person is unsure about what may be causing these type of symptoms, there should be a medical workup to determine the origin.

I have no acid reflux symptoms except for I can burp nonstop. Recently I've noticed a sensation of shortness of breath. Hiatal hernia??

I have no acid reflux symptoms except for I can burp nonstop. Recently I've noticed a sensation of shortness of breath. Hiatal hernia??

GERD: The belching and substernal symptoms with shortness of breath are findings seen in many cases of reflex esophagitis and hiatal hernia. Inflammation of lower esophagus is frequently associated with shortness of breath due to substernal extension of the inflammation. Omeprazole is used to treat these symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux.

See a psychiatrist: If indeed you are truly a hypochondriac that can be a serious condition. Would encourage you to see a psychiatrist. In reference to your shoulder pain, there's not enough information to make a comment.

Yes, any chronic pain should be check out by a doctor, including a chronic sore throat. Yes, acid reflux should be evaluated and treated. Trouble swallowing+pain at times, chest pain, shortness of breath, feeling of food stuck, hiccups after eating/drinking, acid reflux. Could it be cancer?

Trouble swallowing+pain at times, chest pain, shortness of breath, feeling of food stuck, hiccups after eating/drinking, acid reflux. Could it be cancer?

Could be: While it could be, it's not likely. What is certain is that you need a test called EGD - you need to see a gastroenterologist for this. You sound like you have a stricture that would benefit from being dilated.

Sometimes feels short of breath for no reason. Ocassionally cough white clear mucus. Doc says acid reflux. Can gerd cause short of breath or is it copd?

Cardiac or lung: 26 year old man with shortness of breath could be anything from anxiety to pulmonary or even cardiac condition. It is important to be seen by your doctor who will ask you several questions regarding the situation that provoked the shortness or breath and other associated symptoms and will examine your heart and lungs and may recommend EKG as well as breathing test to narrow the diagnosis

Yesterday went to bed with huge acid reflux. Upon waking up a little short of breath. Oxygen saturation normal. Is this common?

Bad reflux can: Cause shortness of breath and can present similar to acute asthma. The acid from the stomach goes up and out the esophagus and down the trachea into the lungs. This acid burns the lungs causing swelling, increased mucus production and narrowing of the airways resulting in cough and shortness of breath. Rx- elevate head of bed to 30 degrees, increase dose of acid blockers, & see ur doc.

I feel nauseous but not like vomiting, I feel dizzy, short of breath, dr said I may have acid reflux, im on Nexium (esomeprazole) and Zantac for 2 months. No luck.

Complicated: Nausea is a typical gerd symptom but not dizzy or shortness of breath. Those are unusual. I suggest you get a fresh evaluation by someone else - a second opinion, to make sure something else isn't going on.

I m short of breath with minimum exertion. Cbc, ecg, spirometry xray all normal. B12 a lil low and hv acid reflux. Previous smoker bt quit a year ago.

Exercise test?: If you have most problem in getting air in and the shortness of breath starts in less than 10 minutes after exercise, vocal cord dysfunction (in which the throat closes up during breathing instead of opening up), needs be considered. An ENT evaluation may be helpful. Absent that, I would recommend an exercise tolerance test to find out the cause.
