The blood is first filtered by the kidneys, and the composition of the resulting fluid is then altered depending on the body's needs. I did a urine sample at my first midwife appt, they then asked for a 2nd sample but couldn't tell me why! They have now asked for a 3rd! What's wrong?

Probably nothing: Many people now check urines on pregnant women at each check to monitor proactively for things like signs of infection, protein or blod in urine, monitor fluid status. It is likely this is just part of your midwife's routine and that nothing is wrong at all. It's just like taking your pulse, blood pressure and other vital signs when you're pregnant. ...Read more

What can doctors tell from a urine sample?

What can doctors tell from a urine sample?

Depends on the test.: Doctors order specific tests on urine depending on the patient's needs. The most common urine tests check for blood, protein, ph imbalance, diabetes, kidney problems & infection. Microscopy can further find stone crystals, bacteria, or yeast. Toxicology tests look for drugs of abuse (amphetamine, cocaine, opiates, benzo). Specialized tests can look for endocrine problems (cortisol). ...Read more

You may have thin-GBM non-disease or some unknown issue. If everything else checks out normal, stop worrying. ...Read more

The pain or other symptoms can be nearly unbearable. I treat frequently in this specific scenario without testing. ...Read more

Please tell me, could a lab tell the difference between concerta and focalin (dexmethylphenidate) XR in a urine sample?

Please tell me, could a lab tell the difference between concerta and focalin (dexmethylphenidate) XR in a urine sample?

Depends on tests: Kenneth G answered 8 months ago
It all depends on the test they use. With a basic screen, amphetamine like drugs will look like the same things. If they do more sophisticated analysis, that's not the case. Now, the difference between Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) and Concerta is minimal. They are the same molecule, but Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) is the right-handed "dextro" isomer of methylphenidate vs Concerta which is a "racemic" mixture of left and right handed isomers. The dextro is considered to be the most active. If you're on Concerta, the urinary metabolite is d, l ritalinic acid. With focalin, (dexmethylphenidate) just d-ritalinic acid. ...Read more

I've been experiencing incontinence for 10 months and doc prescribed meds and took urine sample. What could sample tell us other than possible uti?

A basic dipstick: Urinalysis checks for: glucose (sugar), pH (acidity), bilirubin & urobilinogen (liver primarily), hemoglobin (red blood cells), leukocyte esterase (white blood cells), specific gravity (concentration of substances in urine), protein (kidney primarily), nitrates (bacterial action), ketones (diabetes & starvation). Infection, diabetes, kidney problems & dilute urine may affect urinary continence. ...Read more

Docs, could a lab tell the difference between concerta and focalin (dexmethylphenidate) XR in a urine sample?

Docs, could a lab tell the difference between concerta and focalin (dexmethylphenidate) XR in a urine sample?

No: To detect d, l-methylphenidate (Concerta) or d-methylphenidate (Focalin) a quantitative LC-MS/MS test and critical-frozen specimen are required. Urine should be collected within 8 hours of dosing, and blood (serum/plasma) within 4 hours of dosing. These tests do not distinguish between d- and l- isomers of methylphenidate. ...Read more

Can a doctor tell the difference between a bladder infection and a UTI from a urine sample?

Can a doctor tell the difference between a bladder infection and a UTI from a urine sample?

Same thing.: Although urinary tract infections (uti's) can occur anywhere along the urinary tract, the bladder is the most common site, so a bladder infection is in fact a uti. A urine culture cannot differentiate between the potential locations of the uti, but it can identify the bacteria causing the infection to help guide appropriate antibiotic treatment. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Useless test: This test is not of any value. So you do not have to worry about any value in the urine. If you have any concerns, get a liver function tests (LFTs) panel done. This is what can reflect in the urine but it is better to go to the source of the potential problem than indirect testing in the urine. ...Read more

Do they take a blood or urine sample when testing for pneumonia?

Maybe: The complete blood cell count can sometimes help a doc narrow down the potential cause of a pneumonia and a blood culture can find the germ if it is in the blood. Urine is not much of a help but often taken to verify normal kidney function. Many docs know its pneumonia from the exam and or chest x-ray and may treat on that basis. ...Read more

How long can a urine sample sit before it is sent to lab for testing without going bad?

Depends: Some things such as glucose must be tested pretty quick as they are consumed by cells and bacteria in the urine. Cells deteriorate quickly, bacteria multiply quickly. Protein could deteriorate. The ph can change depending upon bacterial action.

Sodium, potassium, chloride, an similar elemental analytes are unchanged in spite of temperature and or biologic processes.

In general test asap. ...Read more

How Long does green tea stay in your system and will it give a positive reading in a urine sample?

How Long does green tea stay in your system and will it give a positive reading in a urine sample?

About 8 hours, no: Most of the chemicals in green tea are excreted within 8 hours, though trace amounts might persist up to 24 hours. I don't know why anyone would be testing for green tea in a urine sample as it is not considered a drug of abuse. If you were tested for caffeine it might show up but generally urine tests don't check caffeine.

Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more
