Can a benign goiter be converted to a malignant tumor?

Goiter: Goiter is enlargement of the thyroid due to inflammation usually. Nodules or growths within a thyroid gland can be inflammatory but over time turn cancerous. Close monitoring with ultrasound is strongly recommended. ...Read more

Do solid benign thyroid nodules grow quickly? And could you have normal TSH levels with a solid benign nodule on the thyroid?

Do solid benign thyroid nodules grow quickly? And could you have normal TSH levels with a solid benign nodule on the thyroid?

Nodules: Growth of thyroid nodules may represent malignancy. The only way to really know is to perform fna biopsy. Many patients with solid thyroid nodules will have normal tsh. Thyroid scans are generally no longer thought to be useful in distinguishing between benign and malignant nodules. Rai thyroid scans should be ordered in patients with suspected hyperthyroidism, not routinely for all patients. ...Read more

Can benign thyroid nodule become malignant?

Can benign thyroid nodule become malignant?

Well...: A thyroid nodule is technically not "benign" unless it's surgically removed and the pathologist found no cancer in the specimen. A nodule that is still in your neck could still be cancerous despite a "benign" biopsy because not all of the nodule is cancerous. Sometime it's just a speck that is cancerous and was missed during the biopsy. That's why it's important to continue to follow the nodule. ...Read more

Might a benign thyroid nodule someday become a cancer?

Might a benign thyroid nodule someday become a cancer?

Not 100%: If the nodule is still in your neck, there is no way to know that it is 100% benign. Even if you had a biopsy before and it came back benign, there is still a chance that the spot of cancer was missed during the first biopsy. This is why we don't "poo poo" it away after 1 biopsy but continue to follow the thyroid nodule to monitor for size changes. All said, the risk of cancer is very small. ...Read more

Can papillary or follicular thyroid cancer spread quickly? Or is the only fast spreading thyroid cancer anaplastic?

Can papillary or follicular thyroid cancer spread quickly? Or is the only fast spreading thyroid cancer anaplastic?

Please see below: Papillary and follicular thyroid cancers are referred to as differentiated thyroid cancer, which means that the cancer cells look and act in some respects like normal thyroid cells. Papillary and follicular thyroid cancers account for more than 90% of all thyroid cancers. They tend to grow very slowly. ...Read more

Could it happen such that a benign thyroid nodule turn into malignant years later?

Could it happen such that a benign thyroid nodule turn into malignant years later?

Not likely: Benign thyroid nodules almost always remain that way. The more likely instance is that a malignant nodule grew within the benign nodule (more likely when the benign nodule is large). These are usually examined on ultrasound and biopsies via fine needle aspiration or core biopsy. How often are thyroid nodule microcalcifications cancerous? Can capsule be ruptured during biopsy?

How often are thyroid nodule microcalcifications cancerous? Can capsule be ruptured during biopsy?

Common. No: Depending on the exact type of microcalcification, there is a significant rate of cancer. So nodules with microcalcs should be biopsied. There is minimal risk to doing thyroid fine needle aspiration/biopsy. No issues with rupture of the capsule, spread of cancer, etc. ...Read more

How can a thyroid gland grow back?

Glands grow: If not all of the thyroid was removed, the remnant will likely grow back, especially if the TSH was slightly high or normal (tsh is a stimulus to growth). Surgery usually does not remove every last cell of the thyroid, even if it is called a "total thyroidectomy". See your endocrinologist. ...Read more

Does a single solid thyroid nodule grow rapidly if it is benign? The nodule is not a goiter. Tsh levels are normal.

Nodule: A single rapidly growing thyroid nodule is concerning regardless of thyroid function. If it has doubled in size in a short time or measures over 1 cm it necessitates a biosy to rule out malignancy. ...Read more

Can thyroid adenoma develop into carcinoma?

Can thyroid adenoma develop into carcinoma?

No: A true thyroid adenoma is a benign tumor. However, this can only be accurately assessed once it has been removed surgically -- not by fine needle aspiration. There are molecular alterations seen in carcinoma than are not seen in adenoma. However, some of the molecular changes are cumulative, like p53 mutations -- which are expressed in higher frequency in cancer. ...Read more
