Good idea to be taking melatonin and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) together for an inability to sleep?
Not Really: It is always dangerous to mix multiple sedating medications especially if you drink alcohol or take pain medication or other sedatives. In addition, prolonged use of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for sleep can cause poor quality sleep due to disruption of resting brain wave patterns. Best to stick with Melatonin. See a sleep specialist if your insomnia does not improve. ...Read more
With a international flight soon, i will try to get ativan for the flight. To sleep good while there, would 1-3 mg of melatonin or sonata (zaleplon) be better ?
I would start with: Melatonin taken about two hours before your desired bedtime. If that does not work, you can use 10 mg of sonata (zaleplon) if prescribed for you and in this situation i write may repeat x 1 if you wake up and have at least three hours of sleep time left, so you can take another and go back to sleep within about twenty minutes. Have a great flight and a happy new year. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Yes, but careful if: 5-htp is safe & often very effective for sleep. Unlike pharmaceuticals, it actually improves sleep quality as well as quantity. However, if you are taking certain meds like antidepressants there is a potential for raising your serotonin levels too high, though I have had many patients safely combine these. Melatonin: Yes it will but it works best when taken 30-60 minutes before bed and also when you stay in a darkened environment prior to sleep. So keep the room you sleep in dark and it will have a better effect. Other short acting sedatives such as zaleplon may also be of help, particularly for shift work. ...Read more

Insomnia: There are tons of different sleep aids available, but at this point your insomnia is also caused by the fear/anxiety of not being able to fall asleep. I've had good success with short as needed use of Lorazepam in select patients. It works like a champ for them up to a week and then they are able to sleep on their own. There's a concern of them being addictive, but short and as needed use is ok. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I would start with a: Recommendation for good sleep hygiene. I would only suggest Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for very short term use. I tend to recommend melatonin over benadryl (diphenhydramine). Try these sleep tips. 1. Keep a regular bedtime & wakening time (to include weekends). Get up the same time each day, regardless of what time you fell asleep. 2. Make a regular, relaxing bedtime routine. Relaxing rituals prior to bedtime may include a warm >. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is it safe for an 11 year old who weighs 81lbs to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and melatonin every night as a sleep aid together?
Yes and no: The answer to your question is yes it is safe. The next question that comes to my mind though, is why she needs a sleep aid every night at age 11. If she has a type of sleep initiation disorder, have behavioral interventions with her bedtime routine been tried, including no computer or LED screen time for two hours prior to bed? Will meditation and relaxation techniques help rather than chronic med ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) : If you do not take any tricyclic antidepressants, and have a positive TCA on a toxicology screen, is likely the diphenhydramine that you're taking, which can sometimes give a false positive for TCA. If the Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) hinders your nighttime sleep, consider taking melatonin rather than diphenhydramine for long-term use. ...Read more
0.3 mg-3 mg: Start with lower dose and work up as needed. Only use melatonin for < 3 months. If melatonin is the 'natural' sleep aid, is there a 'natural' aid for anxiety? Does something like that exist?
Melatonin: Melatonin is a very safe and effective substance for insomnia. If you are under artificial light, melatonin is produced but not released. Also, it has been found that it is an antitumoral agent.
