Can an abdominal hernia cause internal bleeding?

Can an abdominal hernia cause internal bleeding?

Not directly: The most common type of hernia (in the groin) would not cause intestinal bleeding unless the intestine were strangled in the hernia -- and this would cause many more problems than simple bleeding. Hiatal herniae can facilitate acid refluxing into the esophagus which may lead to ulcers or erosions which may case esophageal bleeding, but not usually intestinal. Why do you ask? ...Read more

Could a stomach hernia cause bleeding?

Not usually: Hernias of the abdominal wall should be surgically repaired. Serious complication can occur - including the hernia growing larger and trapping bowel within it. When that happens the hernia is painful and dangerous.
Bleeding is not common - it does occur if bowel is trapped. Please do see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

My husband is in his 50's, has an umbilical hernia (quite large), has put on several lbs. In the last 2- 3 months. Now bleeding from naval.? Serious

Possibly: The weight gain may have thinned the skin and allowed it to become irritated more easily as well as put more pressure on it from the hernia. Need to see a surgeon now for evaluation and to prevent infection or involvement of the hernia itself. ...Read more

I had my period on the 4/5 I had sex it came on a day early, then on the 4/24 I had sex, it came again, I been bleeding for 7 days, I have a hernia?

Unrelated: Your periods occur because of changes in hormones within your system. While a lot of women have a period every month around the same time, there is variation from cycle to cycle. Ie – a period may come on a few days earlier or later and maybe heavier or lighter depending on the endometrium lining. It may come continuously or with intermittent spotting. These are variation of a normal process ...Read more

I just had hernia surgery a week ago and had to strain to have a bowel movement and now have vaginal bleeding could it be from the surgery?

Unlikely: Straining to have a BM might cause pain at site of hernia repair but I can't see the connection to vaginal bleeding unless you have GYN problems unrelated to the surgery. If bleeding persists see your OB/GYN. ...Read more

Hernia w/sever pain by umbilical repair w/mesh. Also just hospitalized for unknown intestinal bleeding. Colonoscopy in 6 days. Related to each other?

Hernia w/sever pain by umbilical repair w/mesh. Also just hospitalized for unknown intestinal bleeding. Colonoscopy in 6 days. Related to each other?

Postop complications: I cannot answer for sure as it depends on what they actually did during surgery. Potentially the two can be related as either due to postop complication (intestinal injury) or sometimes hernias could be due to Meckel's diverticulum (a pouch coming off the small intestine) that sometimes leads to intussusception and bleeding. Colonoscopy might help determine if there is a large bowel cause. ...Read more

Recently diagnosed with abdominal hernia but have had vaginal bleeding for 7 weeks?

Hernia: The abdominal hernia is most likely NOT related to the Vaginal bleeding. 7 weeks of bleeding is concerning, so see your GYN first to get that evaluated and diagnosed, then treated. Secondarily, you can see the general surgeon to see if your abdominal wall hernia needs to be repaired. Best wishes. ...Read more

What are the symptoms of an inguinal hernia recurrence? Is there pain, bleeding, bruising, etc, or does the hernia just come back?

What are the symptoms of an inguinal hernia recurrence? Is there pain, bleeding, bruising, etc, or does the hernia just come back?

FeelsLikeThe1stTime: A recurrent inguinal hernia will manifest itself as a bulge in the groin, not unlike any inguinal hernia. It is usually a gradual process so there is no sign of trauma like bruising or bleeding. Surgical rx can be a little tricky the 2nd time around--as a general trend, if it was fixed one way the 1st time (open), we tend to recommend the alternate (laparoscopic) the 2nd time. ...Read more
