Can A Having A Fractured Skull As An Infant Cause Lower Iq Later In Life
Depends: The crack itself does not mean a kid will suffer diminished performance later on. Some babies have relatively simple fractures from falls or incidental trauma & don't mess up the brain inside. Some may suffer brain injury to a minor or major degree & the potential outcome depends on the amount & location of brain injury involved. The quicker the recovery the less likely an impact on iq. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more
Possibly: This is one of those things you will never get a straight answer to, unless the trauma was severe enough to have caused brain damage. Even then, it is more likely than not that the seizures are not related to the trauma. I would consult a good epileptologist (neurologist specializing in seizures). Sometimes the seizure focus can be found and resected. ...Read more
Why would infants under 12 months wear helmet? Don't know what it's called - this one resembles that for a fractured skull? I see it a lot nowadays.
Hi is there a true way to put a time frame on when a skull fracture and healed rib fractures could have happened on an infant 3 months old?
Depends: How did the fracture occur? Was there a fall? If the brain sustained a significant deceleration injury there could be damage to the nerve fibers of the brain. Some areas of the skull are thin and more easily fractured so less force would be transferred to the brain. More force could cause concussion, contusion, bleeding, and yes, a permanent injury. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

8-12 weeks: Each child is different. Some kids recover fast and some take a little more time. They should do an x-ray a few days down the road to make sure she is healing properly. I'm hoping they did a cat scan when it happened to make sure she didn't have any bleeding in her brain which is somewhat common after a skull fracture.Good luck. ...Read more

My son suffered a skull fracture at 4 weeks, which caused him to have seizures. Will this cause him to have autism?
Can co-exist: The skull is separated from the brain by a few tissue layers, & bleeding from the fracture can get between the skull and these layers and cause a problem called an epidural. Epidurals can become large & press on the brain. The event/trauma that caused the fracture can also cause tissue damage in the brain with bleeding & swelling. ...Read more
Usually not: If you wear a motorcycle helmet and hit your head, the helmet is designed to protect by breaking and absorbing the force. So does the skull protect the brain. Usually not a major issue, unless the crack cuts across the middle meningeal artery, which could result in an epidural hemorrhage, or it affects the cribiform plate at top of nose, loss of smell. So, not serious, unless... ...Read more

A skull fracture can be seen on a cat scan, and may or may not be associated with a concussion. Hopefully, the skull absorbs the force and there is no brain damage. ...Read more
