You : You need to discuss the results of your pap smear with your doctor again so you better understand what was found. Sometimes a test is done with the pap smear to determine if the cerix is infected with a strain of hpv that would put you at a higher risk for cancer and sometimes a special examination of the cervix called a colposcopy is needed to double check the area. Thankfully, many, many women who have abnormal cells will not develop cancer. ...Read more

Whats a way to break the awkwardness of getting s pap smear... should i try and make conversation or something with my doc?

Start by an appointment to discuss they type of screening needed at your age and if you have risk factors like DES baby. If a PAP is needed, there is a nurse in the room so you can talk to her about women's health. ...Read more

I had a pap smear recently and the results were inconclusive. The doctor said I should wait 2 months before doing a second test. Why wait that long?

Tincture of time: Sometimes there are factors present that interfere with pap-smears. Letting a little time pass allows things to go back to normal. Who wants a pap twice in the same month anyway? ...Read more

I had my first abnormal pap smear. Why are the doctors telling me to return in a year?

I had my first abnormal pap smear. Why are the doctors telling me to return in a year?

Depends...: Most doctors order pap smear and hpv test at the same time. Hpv is the virus that we now know causes cervical cancer. Depending on the results of the pap smear and hpv test combined, the doctor formulates how they want patients to follow up. Abnormal pap smear with the diagnosis of ascus and hpv negative has a about a 1% risk of progressing to a high grade dysplasia or cancer within one year. ...Read more

My pap smear result is moderate inflammation. What the means? Thanks doc.

White blood cells: Inflammation found on a pap smear is usually not something to get too concerned about. It means that they detected some white blood cells in the specimen and possibly saw red looking cervical cells. Could be cervical inflammation which is common and does not necessarily mean a problem. It's possible there's an infection (but not always) and your doc may repeat the pap in 6 months. ...Read more

My doctor was giving me a pap smear yesterday and asked me how many kids do i already have, what could be the reason she asked?

Routine question--: This is information any doctor needs to have on record, like if you have allergies or ever had surgery or any chronic disease. Does a pap smear accurately show trichamonas vaginalis.. My doctor said I have it but my partner does not. How is this possible?

It often is accurate: If a pap smear shows trichomonas it is often correct, but an office exam with a microscopic wet smear may be helpful for the diagnosis. Trichomonas is a free-living one-celled organism that can live anywhere there is moisture; it can be transmitted through casual contact with bodies of water or any moist object. It is therefore possible that you may have it and your partner does not. ...Read more
