Hair Loss (Definition)

Hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia, can be caused by different reasons, including damage to the hair shaft or follicles or fungal infections. There are two main types of alopecia. Alopecia areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair to fall out. Androgenetic (or androgenic) alopecia, on the other hand, is an inherited form of hair loss. With alopecia areata, hair can fall out in patches all over the body. With androgenetic alopecia, hair on the head first thins and then falls out. What tests does a dermatologist do to determine reasons for hair loss in a woman?

Hair Loss: Your doctor may perform blood tests to determine if you have a medical condition that causes hair loss, such as thyroid disease, diabetes or lupus. When a diagnosis is difficult to confirm, your doctor may perform a punch biopsy. During this test, the doctor uses a circular tool to remove a small section of your scalp skin's deeper layers. ...Read more

I am 27 year old woman. I am recently started to suffer from hair loss. <br/>Visited Dermatologist and she prescribed me to use Morr F3% at night dail?

Minoxidil/Finasterid: While I was not able to locate Morr F3 at www.drugs.com, it does appear to be a combination of Minoxidil (blood pressure lowering drug) & Finasteride (prostate shrinking & hair loss med). Both are traditionally used in men suffering from hair loss. However, Finasteride is Category X in women trying to conceive. So make sure you're using appropriate birth control (i-Pill doesn't count). ...Read more

Male 22, experiencing hair loss. Any advice/tips? Also is it ok to see an internal medicine dr or only dermatologist?

Your choice: All men lose the hair on our temples at your age. How fast you develop classic male pattern baldness correlates pretty well with how much chest hair you're naturally blessed with. Before you as a dermatologist recommend a new hair loss product to a patient, what things would you want to know/ask manufacturer about this product?

What drugs work: I would want to know the cost of the product, the duration of treatment for an effect to occure, the adverse side effects of the product and whether of not, if the product is stopped, the hair will fall out again. I would also want to know if there are any scientific studies supporting the use of this product and comparing it to alternative treatments. ...Read more

Many possibilities.: Hair "turns over" faster than just about anything else in the body, and many things - from illness to injury to surgical procedures to hormonal imbalances to infections to stress - can interfere with the normal hair cycle. Don't waste your money on tonics and "hair vitamins". Let a dermatologist go through the possibilities and find the cause. (hair loss with the bulb attached is common.). ...Read more

What would a dermatologist prescribe a 25 year old woman with moderate hormonal hair loss? Topical recommendations are appreciated.

What would a dermatologist prescribe a 25 year old woman with moderate hormonal hair loss? Topical recommendations are appreciated.

First a derm would: need to find out the cause of the hair loss to determine best treatment. I do love oral supplements like viviscal, but would need to see your hair loss to determine topicals. OTC rogaine (minoxidil) for women can't hurt, but see derm for answers ...Read more
