Stress (Definition)

Stress affects most people in some way. Acute (sudden, short-term) stress leads to rapid changes throughout the body. Almost all body systems (the heart and blood vessels, immune system, lungs, digestive system, sensory organs, and brain) gear up to meet perceived danger. These stress responses could prove beneficial in a critical, life-or-death situation. Over time, however, repeated stressful situations put a strain on the body that may contribute to physical and psychological problems. Chronic (long-term) stress can have real health consequences and should be addressed like any other health concern. Fortunately, research is showing that lifestyle changes and stress-reduction techniques can help people learn ...Read more

How fast can a brain aneurysm develop? Is a CT or MRI adequate diagnostic tools? What else could cause daily headaches.

Depends on size: Ct or mr angiograms are good screening tools, and surgeons are using cta to plan surgery instead of angiograms. If you have an aneurysm, there is a certain chance that it will grow over time. How fast it grows is not predictable. If you don't have an aneurysm, you should have your doctor look for other reasons for headaches. ...Read more

I was wondering what are the causes of brain aneurysm?

Congenital: The classic teaching has been that there is a congenital defect in the walls of the blood vessels from which the aneurysm arises. This is at the juncture of the vessels usually at the base of the skull in what is called the circle of willis. This allows the growth of the aneurysm over time. This is exacerbated by hypertension or smoking. Persons with polycystic kidney disease have increased risk. ...Read more

Can hitting your head cause brain aneurysm? Mild to severe head trauma with pain resolution after 4 minutes.

No, not possible.: No, trauma to the head cannot cause an aneurysm. But I want to make sure we are using the terms in a similar fashion. An aneurysm is an unstable blood vessel, a bleed in the brain is a different process. A hard enough trauma could cause bleeding in the brain or it could (rarely) cause rupture of an existing aneurysm. ...Read more

Did my past amphetamin & XTC addiction (used daily for a year) put me at risk for developing a brain aneurysm? (clean for 6 years, 22 year old woman)

Possible, unlikely: Both of these substances are associated with blood vessel abnormalities during use. It is possible that prolonged use could lead to permanent structural changes but would be rare. Aneurysms are secondary to blood vessel wall weakening which can be caused by genetic or acquired risk factors. If you survived that year without strokes it is unlikely but the only way to know for sure is imaging ...Read more
