Can A Benign Thyroid Nodule Turn Cancerous
Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more
Well...: A thyroid nodule is technically not "benign" unless it's surgically removed and the pathologist found no cancer in the specimen. A nodule that is still in your neck could still be cancerous despite a "benign" biopsy because not all of the nodule is cancerous. Sometime it's just a speck that is cancerous and was missed during the biopsy. That's why it's important to continue to follow the nodule. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Unlikely but ask doc: Most of the the thyroid nodules are benign, cystic nodules are even more benign, but sometimes a small focus of cancer could be inside the cyst, to be sure most of the time after fine needle aspiration (fna) will be done by your doctor send for biopsy ( cytology ) to be sure it is benign.. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Not 100%: If the nodule is still in your neck, there is no way to know that it is 100% benign. Even if you had a biopsy before and it came back benign, there is still a chance that the spot of cancer was missed during the first biopsy. This is why we don't "poo poo" it away after 1 biopsy but continue to follow the thyroid nodule to monitor for size changes. All said, the risk of cancer is very small. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Not likely: Benign thyroid nodules almost always remain that way. The more likely instance is that a malignant nodule grew within the benign nodule (more likely when the benign nodule is large). These are usually examined on ultrasound and biopsies via fine needle aspiration or core biopsy. Yes.: A follicular adenoma may be a wolf in sheep's clothing, because cells from follicular adenomas and follicular carcinomas can look the same. Other follicular adenomas may have almost no chance of being cancers, but overproduce thyroid hormone, and need treatment to prevent harmful effects of hyperthyroidism on the bones, heart and other tissues. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Do solid benign thyroid nodules grow quickly? And could you have normal TSH levels with a solid benign nodule on the thyroid?
Nodules: Growth of thyroid nodules may represent malignancy. The only way to really know is to perform fna biopsy. Many patients with solid thyroid nodules will have normal tsh. Thyroid scans are generally no longer thought to be useful in distinguishing between benign and malignant nodules. Rai thyroid scans should be ordered in patients with suspected hyperthyroidism, not routinely for all patients. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

How often are thyroid nodule microcalcifications cancerous? Can capsule be ruptured during biopsy?
Common. No: Depending on the exact type of microcalcification, there is a significant rate of cancer. So nodules with microcalcs should be biopsied. There is minimal risk to doing thyroid fine needle aspiration/biopsy. No issues with rupture of the capsule, spread of cancer, etc. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Biopsy shows spitz nevus cells under another type of benign mole. Melenoma can't be ruled out yet. Can melanoma grow under a benign mole?
Yes: In fact, this is fairly common. No one knows where spitz nevus leaves off and a melanoma capable of metastasizing begins. This is one of the hardest calls in pathology, and some say it's impossible. The burning question will be whether to do additional surgery. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
