I am 22 year old. I had a gallstone with size of 1.2cm in gall bladder. I have mild discomforts and stabbing pain sometimes. Is surgery recommended?

Probably yes: While there is never 100% accuracy in medicine, sounds like it would be a good idea to remove the gallbladder in order to alleviate your symptoms, especially if they are worse with eating, and the pain is in the upper abdomen. It sounds like yes: There is a large gallstone that can block the bile from getting out of the gallbladder. When that happens you feel pain and discomfort. My 89 year old mother had her gallbladder removed 10 years ago. She has a gallstone that is 8 CM in her bile duct. What is the best way to remove it?

My 89 year old mother had her gallbladder removed 10 years ago. She has a gallstone that is 8 CM in her bile duct. What is the best way to remove it?

Several options: An 8 cm stone in the common bile duct is extremely unusual but should be addressed quickly. There are two main ways of dealing with this, she could have an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and have the stone extracted thru the duodenum with an endoscope — she may need lithotripsy to break up the stone first; she could have surgery, probably open but possibly laparoscopic. ...Read more

My mother is 43 years old. She has gallbladder stones. Dr. Has suggested to remove gallbladder . I wanted to know whether there Would be any problems to her or her health in future after removing gallbladder?

Fatty foods: As she would be missing the normal bonus release of bile that is ejected from a normally functioning gallbladder after a meal, her ability to digest fatty foods would be worse than when she would have had her gallbladder. So, eating fatty foods will result in bloating, discomfort and malabsorption. In this context, a low-fat diet is advised. Otherwise, she’ll be fine. ...Read more

What causes gallstones? My mother went to ER yesterday and they found gallstones. Will she have to have surgery? She is 79 years old.

Gallstones: Are lumps found in the gallbladder or bile duct that are formed when substances there harden. It is not clear what causes them but can be from too much cholesterol in the bile, too much bilirubin in the bile or your gall bladder does not empty correctly. I'm having a constant pain on my left side, wondering is it possible to have gallstones in my pancreas if I had my gallbladder removed last year?

Retained gallstones: Although it's always possible to have retained gallstones after gallbladder removal, it is unlikely that they would be in the pancreas. It is possible for them to be in the bile duct and for them to cause pancreatitis, although the pain is usually either in the midline or in the right upper quadrant if that occurs. Your pain now is probably not due to your gallbladder. See your doctor. Good luck. ...Read more

A year ago I had abdominal ultrasound and the results were belly sludge vs. shadow gallstones. What does that mean?

Gallstones: It just means you have gallstones and some thickened bile fluid in your gall ladder. If you have been having pain in your abdomen on the upper right side those stones may be causing it. If not then you have asymptomatic gallstones which are very common and are nothing to worry about. If you are having pain I would see your pcp about it so they can refer you to a surgeon to remove the gallbladder. ...Read more
